slp airbox question 06 polaris

I have an 06 polaris rmk 700 151 threw a few goodies on it so far and mostly ride the trails enroute to the washington hills and powder, ive vented the sled to reduce as much heat as possible and now am looking to purchase the slp airbox for the sled. you cut 14 pounds in the front! and gain a few horses sounds good but........it appears u remove the front radiator in the nose to do it? anybody know if this creates problems? or have any experience? seems like were always trying to reduce heat on these sleds and this scares me......

By the way I havent had to much trouble with smoking belts and balance problems on this sled like i've heard. but yes she does rattle a lot with that long stroke if anybody has the same sled and would like to chat about these motors i would love to hear your experiences.....

Radiator delete kits abound to get rid of the nosecone radiator on the 2005-06 700 and 900 RMK's. The sleds do very well without it, most run cooler. You may also want to add ice scratchers to make sure you keep the rear exchanger cool. I will be doing the delete on my 06 600 sometime this fall.

Have you taken a look at the Snowest forum? They have a specific subforum for the 900/700 engine and there are some really good posts with directions on how to do the delete...

Airbox reply

Thanks Dan its always nice to have some experienced feedback regarding these modifications, as you know reliability on these machines when your hours up in the mountains is the best "modification" to have! I've been trying to watch this one closely because ive noticed the reports on the balance issue with 700/900. I have a "retired sled mechanic friend" on my side to balance the clutch as well, we run em' pretty hard though and it still vibrates pretty good! what do you think of the push arm? worth it? or just another doo dad? I will check out the site you suggested, sounds great! and finally if you or anybody have any paint questions regarding the hoods etc iv been an automotive painter fer 20+ years and could probably be of use...Thanks again and i do have some scratchers on there...

I hear you on the reliability issue. Walking back to the truck sucks Being towed by a Cat sucks even worse!!

The 700's don't have near the problems the 900's have. I ride with guys that have both, the 700 is stock, the 900 has the radiator delete. On some days, the 900 overheats, usually if the weather is crappy and conditions won't allow you to ride fast enough to toss snow onto the exchangers. The 700 has no delete, and has had no issues with heat, although his temps are still quite a bit hotter than my 08 600 when riding in the same snow. When he's running 150 i'm about 115. The full tunnel cooler of the 07-up models really does a number in cooling. But most guys that do the delete find they run cooler temps without the front radiator and lose the lbs in the process. That's definitely a win/win!

I think the push arm/torque link is a big help in keeping the engine planted, especially the 900. Those first years, guys were going through an 080 belt a ride, sometimes two. That's just stupid. The newer (more spendy) 111 belt helped eliminate that, it's one tough belt. Keeping the engine planted with a torque link and push stop helps keep the clutches aligned which really helped those 900 guys keep the belts from self-destructing. If you are not having many belt issues, you probably don't need one. I don't think it helps with vibration, with that long stroke that engine is going to vibrate, that's just what they do. But if you have breaking belts, it's one thing to try. The 900 motor mounts have also been a problem in some sleds as well; the stock ones were pretty soft and with the amount of torque that engine has, they frequently break, allowing the engine to shift and mis-align the clutches. Viola. More broken belts. That is worth checking, although with all the stuff in the way, it's almost impossible to get to those mounts.

Thanks for the offer of your expertise, that is why I really like this forum.. guys that have knowledge and skill are willing to help those that don't. The rest of us just make stuff up

I had a 2006 polaris fusion 900 and he is right they vibrate bad and I would go through belts all the time my fastest being just 36 miles! I now have a 2007 Dragon 700 love it! I got a Timbersled air box and they do make one for your sled. I think Its pretty nice and it also sheds some pounds and gains about 4 hp. I dont have any miles on it so Im not for sure how good it will be, but I think it will be with all of the other stuff that I put on there. I have to try to keep up with the new 800cc from artic cat. I am a trail rider though not a deep snow rider! I live in Minnesota so no moutains!
