Sticking Primary on XCR800

I have a 99 XCR800 and the primary clutch sticks when you come to a stop and it is not smooth to engage when pulling away from a stop. I've read the threads on cleaning the clutch but no testimonials that it actually improved their situation. Is it worth the time to hit the clutch with air and brake cleaner or should I just take it appart and give it a proper cleaning. Note that I don't have the special tools at this time so the latter option means $$$.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the Forum!

It's critical to keep 'em clean. They are designed to operate dry (no lubrication) so when belt dust and grime from engine exhaust get on 'em, they get sticky and will not work properly. I like to blow mine out pretty much after each ride, and remove and clean at least yearly. I'm not a big fan of hydrocarbons to clean the sled, although some brake cleaners are supposed to evaporate 100%. I use soap and hot water with the clutch off the sled, which also gives me a chance to look at the weight bushings and to make sure the main bushings are not worn and binding...

Thanks for the input Dan! That supports my gut instincts that a simple spray off or blow job isn't going to cut the mustard. The previous owner did no and I mean no maintenance on this sled unless it broke down, which it never did. The mileage is relatively low but sitting in storage is sometimes worse than steady use with proper maintenance. I really should locate some tools and get this thing down so I can properly sort it out. I need to buy the clutch tools for my Ski dog as well.

Good excuse to spend some time in the shop eh!

S**t, that ain't good! I guess you will have to attempt to free up the primary in situ or start cuttin it off in chunks. OH that is an ugly thought!

i had a sticky primary with my 89' indy. turns out, there was NO bushing even in the primary cover. check your bushings to make sure there isnt a lot of play. cover bushing should be replaced if you see copper color? i think?

So in your case the bushing was worn to the point that it was actually gone? I will have a boo at mine tonight to see if there is any evidence of such wear. Thanks!
