interesting question about water pump

I have a 96 xcr 600sp. the water pump blew, and its the gear style with the self contained oil reservoir. I got a line on a pump from a 97 ultra spx se. its identical except its not self lubricating. after swapping a ton of pics of our engine port where the pump bolts up, everything looks identical. same hole where it looks like it would lubricate a water pump through the gear housing on both motors. my question is, is this accurate? ive heard that my engine will not lubricate a newer style pump, how do i know this for sure? i would rather not go back to the self contained oil system but is that my only choice? and also if i have to, can i swap parts from the newer pump to my old housing? thanks for your assistance...

What do you mean, your pump "blew"? They are totally rebuildable. Just rebuild yours. And yes, your '96 requires a '96 pump.

Ok i got some info on this that i will share with you guys, might answer some questions later on. As far as the water pumps gp, the 1996 xcr-sp series (non mono blocks) have a self lubricating water pump. There is an oil reservoir on the pump itself that lubes the bearings. now most of the triples that have this style pump, meaning running off the crankshaft gear not belt and pulley, are all interchangable. however in 96, the crank seals do not allow lubrication through the water pump housing, like the 97 and later triples. it is possible to use a 96 style pump like on mine, on the newer triples but absolutely not use the newer pumps on the 96. it sucks because the parts to rebuild this pump are over 200 bucks, and theres not alot of used ones out there to buy because they only made them for under a year. yet if your having this problem make damn sure you get the right water pump.
