brake issues. Rotor on the jack shaft play.

I have a 86 indy were the brake rotor is smooth and sits on a woodruff key. It messed up the shaft where the key wore so I had it welded up and made new again(meaning key sits in the groove nice and tight), but I notice a lot of play with the rotor. If you stop the shaft from turning with the rotor there is no play, but I have side to side play, like it's rocking on the jack shaft. So If you invisiion the rotor on the shaft, woodruff key installed (and tight) and you were standing over it, you could rock the rotor from left to right on the shaft. I'm not sure how much play is normal and new rotors are no longer available. I'm measering the rotor I/D and it's 1.00-1.001 and the shaft diameter is about .986-.988. Is ther supposed to be this much slopp.

The rotor is intended to float as one of the brake pucks is stationary

As long as it is sliding back and forth and not cocking on the shaft, you're OK.

Did you also repair the rotor hub?
There is supposed to be some "float" on the shaft as stated above.

The rotor mic's out 1.00 everywhere I check and the key is perfect so I think it's all in the shaft. The shaft and hub are no longer available to buy new so I just put it back together. I figure I didn't hear anything funny before I tore it apart so if it went round and round then, it will have to go round and round now. Besides brakes are over rated anyways

As long as you have good backshift, brakes are only necessary for emergency stopping anyway.
