Correct plug for 88 indy trail 488

There were BR9ES plugs in the sled. The guy I bought it from blew a piston. There was a hole in the piston. Under the hood it says to use Champion plugs. Could the 9ES plugs be incorrect, and it should really take BR8ES?
My indy 650 runs well with 8ES
