88 Trail 488- oil pump pumps only one hose

I did a test to see if the oil pump was working correctly, and after turning the motor over dozens of times, oil only came out of the right hose. I took the left hose off and put piece of wire through it, there was nothing blocking the hose. I poked into the pump itself where the hose clamps to and it didnt seem blocked. I then took off the top cover of the oil pump, the four screws, exposing the top of the inside of the pump, looking down at the top of a piston. I removed the piston with a needle nose and pulled it out. I dont know why I did this, but it was hard to put back in. I noticed a spring at the bottom, and gears. I blew some of the oil that was at the bottom out, so the piston would go in easier. I put it back in, setting it to the bottom, but it still pokes out a little, and isn't lined up the way I found it. Did I screw myself badly? Can this be fixed without taking the pump off the motor? THANKS

Is that the same hose that supplies oil to the piston that is melted?
