Speedometer problem-'01 Edge 550 Fan

Hi all, just signed on today (been lurking for a while and have received a ton of good info..thanks)
I just bought a 2001 Polaris Edge 550 Fan. I have been fighting with the speedo for a few days now and here is my problem:
- first - no speedometer action what-so-ever. Bought a new cable and installed it...still no speedo. Figured out that it was a broken key-way so I replaced that....
- now, when i get the track moving..the speedo goes from zero all the way to 100 and stays there, doesn't give correct speed, doesn't spring back...just flat out goes all the way to the end of the dial and stays there. I feel like there should be a spring or some kind of tensioner that should keep it at the correct track speed...any ideas??

Remove the cable from the speedo itself and start the sled and get the track moving. If the cable shaft is turning as the track turns, then the speedo itself is junk.
