backfire problem
I had a 98 xc600 and had the same problem right from the beginning. What i did was rejetted the pilots to #45 stock is probably #38, then changed the needle jet to the same one that goes in a 2000 700RMK ask your dealer for info. this solved the problem and ran excellent after.I know this is a big headache but it does work. Before you go and do all this, check the petels on the reed valves to make sure there is not a burnt one. this would cause a air leak and it would backfire.

I checked the throttle safety switch already, it's fine. I took it out a little bit the other day. It was backfiring even at idle every so often when cold. As I got it warmed up, it ran better and after I had run it about 30 mins, it was not doing it at all. Any ideas?

Oh I forgot to mention, I started it again later that night after it had sat and got cold and it was doing it again.

Did you guys come up with more on this? I go along with polaro and may change out the pilots. Mine just barely pops when I cut the throttle, which is no big deal but richer pilots should help that. Also checking to make sure the carbs aren't sucking air around the intake boots or something--
I'm actually on here searching for ignition timing info, but I'll probably sift through the pdf manual I downloaded here (BTW, thanks guys for the free manual) Just feels like the timing is pretty hot on this motor. Anyone goofed around with ignition timing?

Just checked the manual and the 98 xc 600 should have a #45 as stock. Did you buy a high elevation sled? The wierd thing is that the xc 700 shows a #38 pilot...? What's that all about? Is the manual misprinted? And why would the 700 have the same main jet as the 600?
Shows: Jet needle R1368G-3
pilot 45 (600)
pilot 38 (700)
main 185

98 700XCR Backfiring
I'm having the same problem with my 98 700XCR. When I start it cold it won't hardly move, it backfires and bogs down real bad. The other day I started it and got it moving and gave it a little more gas and it backfired so bad it raised the hood and split one of the pipes (had to weld it back together) When it warms up it doesn't backfire much but when I'm crusing at low speeds I can hear it poping like it's firing once in a while. I've cleaned the carbs, changed plugs, run prem.gas. All the plugs look the same, not black but pretty dark. It screams at high RPM but not low.

I think its my reeds, i took the carbs out and cranked it over. air/fuel started spitting back out... I bought some used ones on ebay for cheap so we will see if it fixes it.
