new springs in the clutches
I just bought new springs to put in the primary and secondary clutches for my sled, i took the helix out of the secondary clutch and replaced the spring, put the helix back in and lined up the holes to put the key in the slot. the buttons look fine and i am assuming i put it together correctly but when i try to turn the clutch and open it up it just stops like its hitting metal and wont actually go up the helix and open the clutches. there was 3 holes for the spring to sit into on the helix itself, could that have something to do with it? Or is it just not supposed to open at all when its off the sled? I also put the old spring back in and tried to open it again thinking that might make a difference and i got nothing i can feel the spring tension but it just doesn't open at all, only spins a little bit until it hits something.
Also, my primary clutch is looking a bit iffy and was wondering if i can throw the weights and spring from my current clutch into a clutch from a 95 xlt special and be good to go? The sled the clutch would be going into is an 89 indy trail (the xlt needs a ton of money so its been turned into a parts sled) Would it be possible to do this with both clutches?

Did you wind the spring when you put the clutch back together?

No I didn't, this is the first time I've ever messed with the clutches so I was going in blind hoping for the best. I am guessing that the key is there to keep it wound up and i will have to spin the helix clockwise or counterclockwise?

great, thanks a bunch. The holes on the helix wernt stamped but I put the spring in the hole that looked the most worn or used. Its not making the slamming sound and I still cant open it but it feels like its hitting the buttons and wants to open hopefully its in there correctly lol

ok i think i still might have it wrong, i followed the instructions to the t as best as i could and it still doesnt open the clutch. it just feels like its hitting something. Is it only going to open when its secured to the sled and i can get a good handle on it?
the instructions also talk about the top and bottom of the clutch and turning it counter clock wise but it never actually explains what they are calling the top of it. my guess was when i had the outside half of the clutch in my lap and the inside facing up with the retainer clip and the helix angles pointing downward. Is that correct?
I push the helix down a half inch, turn the clutch plate 1/3 and then put the retainer clip in and it doesnt seem to work?

When the clutch is on the sled, the outside would be the top.

The inner half of the clutch is what you need to turn counterclockwise. Its really helpful to have 2 people do this job. Wind the inner half counterclockwise and have someone hold it there for you and then install the helix yourself.
Its almost impossible the do that job yourself.

Well I am pretty sure I read the instructions right, but now I am just trying to figure out if I did actually installed it properly. The clutch wont open by hand and I don't know if its supposed to or not, I'm not sure how to test it. I don't want to throw it on the sled and take off and break it. It just feels like it hits something metal and stops even after I followed the instructions.. The clutch isn't on the sled right now since I've been messing with it so i guess i cant really get a great grip on twisting it around.

To get it to open, you need to rotate and push the inside sheave. Pushing straight in won't get 'em to open. It's easiest when it's mounted on the sled. With the clutch on the jackshaft, (you don't need to bolt it on to check) push in on the inside sheave and rotate the inside sheave clockwise. It should open. You may have to set the brake to keep the shaft from turning...
Also, while it's open, take a piece of a dead belt a couple inches long and put it in the sheaves to keep the sheaves open. That way, when you put the belt back on, you don't have to have 3 hands to get it done. The belt slips right on with the sheaves held open by the chunk of belt. (and you thought dead belts were useless  )
