I've got a 2000 Polaris Triumph (I think it has XLT engine) 600cc tripple. I am replacing oil seals(rebuilding engine).

When pulling magneto off, does it come off just by using gear puller, or is it screwed on to the camshaft?

It's pressed on, you should use a flywheel puller to get it off. If you use a gear puller and pull from the back of the flywheel, you will probably damage the flywheel...

so do I grab the belt wheel and pull by that?

use a flywheel puller, they are cheap, and it takes only moments to get it off.. snug it up pretty tight on the magneto, and tap the main bolt on the puller with a hammer, that should snap it loose, and then it just pulls off real easy

Like harofreak said. Remove the nut that holds the flywheel, remove the basket, use the puller, (3 screw type). Be careful not to screw in the puller bolts too far, you don't want to damage the stator. Tighten the puller, tap, tighten, tap, it will come off with a bang.
