speedo bearing rusted on

Was wondering if anyone had some advice for me on how to remove the speedometer bearing off of the drive shaft? I got the nut out of the collar but its really seized up. I sprayed it down with pb blaster today. Is it worth trying to get this thing off or should I just bring it to a dealer and have them pop it off without damaging it?

I am in the middle of a track change on an 89 indy trail. Got the secondary off with a little pb blaster and a rubber mallet was hoping maybe i could do the same with that speedo bearing. Thanks for looking.

You need to replace that bearing anyway, just break it or cut it off.

Cut it off with a hand grinder

Did you try to rotate the locking collar? If the bearing has a locking collar and set screw, the collar holds the bearing on and after the set screw is loosened, the collar is rotated to free the bearing. I use a hammer and punch, there's an indent in the collar to assist in rotating it.

thanks for the tips, it does have a collar on it and i tried to move it but i got nothing its really stuck to the shaft I am going to have to cut it off I think. The bearing itself is a little wobbly when i try to spin it so might as well replace it now when i have it apart.

Cut the outer collar... Pry it apart with a screw driver. At some point, it will snap in half. Then remove everything but the inner collar. Then take your cut off tool, and do one of two things... Cut from top down, or cut from side to side. Top down is the easiest, then pry it apart again with a screw driver, but instead of it snapping, just slide it off.

Does anyone know where I might find a website that will sell bearings at a better price? I've been looking at OEM sites and the lowest i've found was babbits online for 37 dollars, i believe it was, but the problem with these people it takes 2 weeks to get parts. Otherwise ive seen from 42-52 dollars for this bearing.

Go to a local bearing shop and bring in what you have left of the old one. They should even be able to look it up for you and give you the correct one for far cheaper!

Just look up bearings in the yellowpages.

look around for a sled repair shop in your area that sells parts. i did all 4 bearings in my '90 500 for like $20 each. the place i went was a parts unlimited distributor.

I will have to stop in at the yamaha dealer (bought my bike brand new and they deal in snowmobiles so they love to accommodate me) but I didn't think of aftermarket, I also found a bearing shop so I'll have to do some comparison shopping. I'll gladly spend a little extra for a quality part but 40-50 seems a little high for an OEM bearing.

Go to Napa or any farm store, you can get the bearings for about $8 each there.
Standard sized 1 1/2" shaft and 3/4" wide outer with locking collars. I don't have the actual numbers here at work.

8 dollars sounds great to me, I can't wait to get this thing put together and have some snow... Going to be a lot different riding this year then last. When I first bought the sled it had a 20 year old worthless rear suspension, worn out track and the sled itself looked like it would have fallen apart if you bumped it too hard but it always ran ok and never actually fell apart. I am replacing the track, going to get an xtra 10 to put into it and I have a crashed xlt special i bought for 100 dollars, which i decided was way too much money to fix, so I stole the hood which fits perfectly on the old one, after I changed the nose cone and mounting brackets, which all pretty much lined up perfectly as it was. I just had to drill 2 holes for the third bolt. I put the speedo/tach into the new hood as well as the halogen headlight. and the track that was on the xlt is still in great condition. After all is said and done I will still have a ton of parts to sell off from the xlt and make my money back from buying the newer suspension (xlt is xtra 12). Might even take the clutch off the XLT and put the weights and spring from the indy trail into it, the indy trail clutch is looking old and worn so i am hoping i can swap those out. Was going to swap out the steering column as well because you cant put handlebar risers on my indy trail since its all 1 piece but I think I will just end up cutting the top of it off and welding the part of the xlt where you bolt the handle bars down to.
