Non-Snowmobile problem with a Polaris....

I have a 96 polaris sportsman that i cannot get to start. since i have found really great help on problems with my sled, i figured i could ask here... my wheeler is a 400cc, single cylinder, 2-stroke. picture a single cyl. 400 polaris sled with tires... anyways, i can't get it to start, and when it finally does, it won't stay running. i have had it going twice in the last 3 days, and both times it runs great at first, awesome power for a min. or so then it sputters, looses power and eventually dies. here is what i have done so far: cleaned carb and all passages, checked floats, new plug, drained the tank, new gas, new fuel lines, new filters... so this is where i stand. it will start if i put alot of gas in the jug and crank it. it is pulling gas into the carb, but not the engine itself. i did find an air leak at the base of the jug so i replaced the gasket (along with the exhaust gasket cause it leaked some too) figuring that if there wasn't enough vacuum that i wouldn't get the fuel to the engine. still nothing coming in from the carb. i cleaned the reeds with stater fluid because they were very carboned, and that wasn't it either. i don't know much about reeds (my sled doesn't have them) so i was wondering if there were maybe sticking open? when i have the cage out and am looking at the reeds, should they be completely closed, or with a slight opening? also, i read on this site that i might be able to flip the reeds over? does that work? i don't want to buy a new set of reeds if i don't have to.... HELP!

Do a compression test- I'll bet it's low. Should be 120+.

I read soemwhere that flipping reeds over is bad, as they it may cause breakage and then ingest it into the engine.

Check for spark when it dies. Maybe your ignition system is failing when it warms up.

Hard starting usually indicates low compression.
