xlt 580 electric starter question

hello from rainy southeast AK!! I'm trying to resurrect a machine that has sat for a while(580 xlt sp 91)It hasn't ran yet but has good spark and i've gave her the whole old gas purge carb cleanout. I'm trying to pull the starter motor to rebuild and am having a tough time getting at the mounting plate bolts. Was wondering the best approach. thought I could pull the ring gear and get at the mounting plate bolts? just having a tough time getting tools into tight spots(bet i'm the first person to ever have that problem) Also the drive clutch is super rusty down near the crankshaft. i hope it'll close back after it runs and the wd 40 busts up the rust since she's in the almost fully open position. Any help from the pros would be great!! I love this forum. thanks guys---stay dry!

Can you remove the exhaust manifold to get at the bolts? Usually when a clutch is rusted up, it'll never work well. Can you remove the clutch bolt and remove the outer half to clean it?

starter removal

If I am not mistaken you have to remove the clutch which has the ring gear attached to it to get at the last couple of bolts on the starter.Sounds like clutch removal was the direction you headed any way.
