questions about "Google: Project Indy 500"

i have read through this acouple of times now, and i have some questions about it... does installing an xtra-10 rear skid really make that big of a difference. i have one, and i don't know if i should bother putting it in my old indy, or just sell it and keep the $. also, this guy talks about a kit from polaris to widen the ski stance. does anyone know if this is still available? could i just you the front end parts from a newer (96ish) indy? if so, would my ifs bars still work or would those have to be changed also. on a side note, pipes on a fuji 500 twin? do the make a difference. i have also read that using a y pipe from a newer 500 helps. is that true, and if it is, which sleds should i look to scavange from.... thanks

Twin pipes on the old 488 doesn't increase the top rated horsepower by more than about 5-8. However, the power range and response is better. Probably not worth the money and tuning issues unless you get them for cheap and you have the time.
As for a later y pipe, I would have to say not likely, as my 1997 Trail RMK has the same one my old 91 Indy 500 had (I doubt the liquid vs fan matters there as they are both Fuji 488's).
The IFS bars are different if I recall. As for the kit, you MIGHT be able to find one on eBay or something.
The Xtra-10 in the rear DOES make that much of a difference.

Hope this helps.

alright, so pipes are out. i have looked on ebay a few times and haven't seen any yet. i have looked into a clutch kit from hot seat performance and was just curious about the pipes and the y pipe cause i would do those first and then clutch accordingly. i have also looked for the kits for the ifs, but haven't found any yet. guess i will just have to call some dealerships and maybe find some nos. i think the xtra-10 i have has fox shocks. can i have fox in the rear skid, and the older style in the front or do i need fox all around?

There is no reason to have matching shocks all the way around. Although some would say that you would improve your front suspension if you "upgradded" to fox there as well. But it won't hurt anything.
