help: indy 500 handlebars

i have a 2000 indy 500 and i am wondering if its possible to put handlebar risers on it. would you have to remove the plastic covering to do that? how high could you go without needing throttle/brake extension? attach pictures if you have any.

Talking bar riser alternative

I have the perfect solution for you...okay here is a low cost alternative to buying a new bar riser kit. what i did was take some left over oak baseboard and cut them all the same length, about 3-1/2'' you may want a solid chunk of oak blocking, and drill the holes through. here are some pics of my sled, and i have used this setup for over a year, with no problems. you also have to buy some threaded rod, because i couldnt find bolts long enough. My wife also made this 'scarf' to cover the gap between the sled and the bars!! it made a world of difference, this 3'' bar rise was amazing... cost: about $4.00

did you have to extend the throttle or brake cables with 3 inches? how tight are the cables?

redneck yes, but it cost only $4.00 and works just as well. And to respond to Freersy, no i did not have to extend the throttle and brake, they work perfect, as is... so the answer to your question is you can put a 3'' riser on your sled with no worries about throttle or brake line extensions.

I also have a 2000 Indy 500 XC, I put a 3" riser on it a couple seasons ago, then to cover the gap, I took a piece of 4" plastic drain tile, cut it down the center, wrapped it around the base of the steering cover, and cut to fit the gap, then put a couple screws in it to hold it together. It almost looks factory, has held up for 2 years so far, and the 3" is perfect lift for most trail/ditch riding, and no mods to the cables was needed.
