Now I posted a question before on why my sled motor locked up.And why I could turn the motor backwards by hand but not forward. Well split the case and found the two end bearings on the pto side had failed and were coming apart.Any ideas on what would cause this?They weren't burnt.The rest of the bearings on the crank look good.Can I just replace those two bearings and put in new seals and call it good .The pistons and everything else look good.

I'm pretty sure those engines were famous for crank bearings, and there is a mod to drill oil holes for those bearings. IRONDOG knows the scoop on them.

Wrong engine. He has the original 580, not the newer 597, which had those issues in 96.

What kind of RPM's were you running? I've seen those engines spin over 10,000 RPM, so I know they will do it.

Also, how many miles?

I'd replace all bearings if you are in that far, no reason having old stuff in there, especially for the relatively low cost.

Other than that, I think you just has a bearing failure.

Another thing to check it crank indexing. ESPECIALLY after a lockup. This may have also caused the lockup if the crank was out of index.

The sled has about 3800 miles on it .I wasn't sure on the rpm but I was only doing about 30 mph at the time.The motor just acted like I had hit the kill switch. and then I couldn't pull the recoil.But another qwestion .on the pto side .I am unable to remove the bearings with a bearing separator puller.They are two bearings side by side .The inner is fell a part all that remains is the inner part on the crank shaft the outer bearing is still mostly there minus a few ball bearing .Any ideas?

I use a hand grinder to cut them off.

thanks for the idea.I have a mini grinder at work. Read a previous post by irondog on a rider with a problem that sounded the same.and if I was to look at the crank on the first cylinder next to the pto it looks like it opened up at the crank pin.Into the crank shop or sell the sled on e bay.

If the budget allows you to do so, Id go for a complete crank rebuild myself. That way, when you put it back together, at least you wont have any issue with the crank too soon. Anyone? WL.

Thanks .But I made that choice already .Cranks being repaired , new pto and bearings and refitted into the bottom end.Then rebored and new pistons.New motor.Then I will have and endless supply of xlt body parts off ebay.
