Wrong engine. He has the original 580, not the newer 597, which had those issues in 96.
What kind of RPM's were you running? I've seen those engines spin over 10,000 RPM, so I know they will do it.
Also, how many miles?
I'd replace all bearings if you are in that far, no reason having old stuff in there, especially for the relatively low cost.
Other than that, I think you just has a bearing failure.
Another thing to check it crank indexing. ESPECIALLY after a lockup. This may have also caused the lockup if the crank was out of index.
