HELP!!, 90 indy 500 torque specs
OK, heres the deal. First off, i'm new here. I own a 1990 indy 500, had the motor rebuilt last year but had some problems with the head, so I just brought the head in to get it decked, just to make sure that it wasn't warped. Bought a new gasket for the head. Now the only thing now, is I am having problems getting a correct torque spec for the head. I don't know what I should torque the head bolts to. If anyone knows the proper amount please help.....:-(

These bolts are 12mm I do believe. They are the top bolts, the ones that bolt the head to the jug? I was told the they should be anywhere between 18 - 20 ft.lbs. But another source told me that 30ft.lbs were okay as well. I am soooo confused. I don't know what to do. If you have that info that would be more than great. Thanks again in advance, and thanks for replying so fast.

Go with what BC Dan said. It sounds right to me also...Small bolts, 18 ft lb, big bolts, 25 ft lb.

Torque at 18 ft/lbs.
Warm the engine to operating temp, and shut it off.
Re-torque head bolts.

The Indy 500 is a liquid; I think the Indy Trail was the fan model... The 500 liquid has two different sized head bolts; the fan has one size (the smaller one). Torque numbers I listed are out of the book.

the new 500's are liquid... but back in 1990 most were fans... i have heard of a few liquid 500's but most of them were fan cooled.

The Indy 500 liquid was initiated in 1988 as a 1989 model. It is the most popular and long-lived liquid Polaris ever used. There are current snowmobiles using that engine or one of similar design. In 1990, the Indy 500, 500 Classic, 500 SKS, and 500 SP were all liquid. The Sport, Trail, Star, and Sprint were fan cooled.
