indy rear suspension spring chart ?

just another silly question but is there a spring chart somewhere for my 87 Indy 400 rear suspension springs. not the front one per say but the back ones. mine seem stiff as hell and does not move when i sit on it. its set to the lowest on the plastic adjusters and the whole suspension has been gone thru and freshly lubed shafts so its not a binding issue. it will move if i stand on the rear bumper but that doesn't seem right. the springs are purple in color all the others i've seen were black. maybe these are extra heavy duty springs? takes alot to take them loose too. my Yamaha exciters were not near as hard to take tension off

Couple of questions:

- Are you sure something in the skid isn't either frozen or rusted up badly? Your first line of defense may be to pull the skid and make sure that everything moves as it should.
- Which "springs" are you referring to? The torsion springs that provide the actual suspension lift / assist, or the coil-over on the shock?
- Are your torsion springs adjusted properly? There are two shoulder bolts to position the torsion spring ends in - the lower ones are "normal" and the higher ones are for heavier riders. Polaris states that the upper position is for weights in excess of 190lbs.

I would think that the springs are not the stock springs. If you remove the spring pressure, does the suspension move easily?

Here's a link to Polaris parts diagrams. On later sleds, Polaris lists OEM springs that are heavier than the "stock" ones. Your sled doesn't show any alternate springs, so it's possible that yours have been replaced by after-market springs.

Perhaps purchase of the stock springs will give you back better movement in the rear of the sled. No guarantees, though. Good luck!

I've had the whole skid out and repacked all the bearings and removed all shafts and cleaned and re-greased and everything is totally free. im 1000% that's not the issue and everything is back together correctly. yes im talking about the rear torsion springs, not the front of the skid with the coil over with shock. my guess is someone at some point may have swapped them. my skid is bolted to the lower steel plate below the tunnel also. im sure this is due to it being studded for clearance. i have to stand on the rear bumper to get mine to move. my back already hurts and haven't even ridden it yet! ideally i will keep my eyes open for a xtra 10 but for now this is what i have and want to see how she does for this season. ps no 2 up. just single seater

Another dumb question - do you have any "before" pics of the skid? How easily did it move when you first got it (and before you pulled the skid)? I'm wondering if maybe a scissor stop or something is out of placement. I've read a lot about guys that flip something forward instead of back or whatever, and the skid basically "locks up". They change the position, re-tighten, and it moves correctly.

There's pretty much no way that those springs should be that stiff unless the person you got it from was a very large person and pointedly upped the strength of them.

its all put back together correctly. im sure of that. the back shaft was frozen when i got it. like i said i been all thru it and its free. i too believe someone was a heavier rider or who knows maybe even riding double and was bottoming out and replaced with these. at any rate im gonna see what i can dig up cheap on ebay and just replace. easiest thing to do and then i will know.
