so i finally got the frozen helix off my secondary today. needless to say it was very grimy. not a clue as to what the spring color was so i found a brand new Polaris red for $15 shipped and ordered new ramp buttons. factory spec calls for the helix to be in hole #2 . thats factory but noticed the holes are not numbered. there is only one hole for the opposite end so which way are they numbered when the ramps are starring towards your face? will i be happy in hole #2 for a stock studded sled?
The Polaris manual I have for 1990 to 1995 shows that the #1 hole is on the right when looking at the ramps. It also states that the stock setting is #2 .
Moving the spring to a hole with more pretension will make back-shifting quicker, and will also require more RPM (about 200 RPM more per hole.) Some guys use the pretension in the secondary to fine-tune to get the RPM they want. That works, to a point. Adding pre-tension to the secondary also adds side force to the belt. The secondary should have just enough force on the belt to keep from slipping; if you add more force, you are losing efficiency.
A better solution would be to set the secondary to give the best combination of back shifting and efficiency and use the primary to control engine RPM.
There. More than you wanted to know. BTW, most clutching is magic. I'm not sure if it's black magic or just plain magic...
ha ha ha. i've done some heavy reading about it and still don't understand it! well sort of but thats it. i do know its very important to have them right as to not rob power. hopfully stock will work fine. if not can always experiment!
If you are looking at the intact clutch from the back side, hole 1 will be on the left. If you are looking at the helix and the ramps, hole 1 is on the right. Some of the newer ones have 5 holes and are marked at 1 and 5
so im still waiting for the red spring i ordered to show up in the mail along with the new wear buttons. i now believe the spring that i pulled out must have been white. at least that was the color on the ends of the springs that get hooked. wonder why this was in there? maybe it worked better then the red? couldn't find any other threads with someone using a white on a indy 400.
