This sled has the white engine cowling and the decals indicate Indy xlt. I assume it is a 1997 model, and has the extra 10 front and rear suspension. I see nothing more in the decals such as SP or any other markings what so ever.

Well it could be a frankinsled, but I need a clutch for the thing. I've got the engine running and behaving flawless, but don't know if it is a 580 or a 600. Can't order a clutch till this mystery is solved. Nothing in the list of models for 96 OR 97 seems to coincide with this sled, and so finding parts are going to be a WAG.
The white engine cowling is only throwing me another curve.

Himins,

Here you go, Everything matches for a 1997 INDY 600 XC.

Good luck with it.

It does have an interesting cowling though, the graphics is close, but doesn't match anything I see in 1997. Unfortunately, the polaris info site:

PolarisMan.com -- Home Page

Doesn't have the 1998s. I think your guess that the hood has been replaced is correct. Either that, or they re-did the hood and used 1998 graphics.

PolarisMan.com -- Sled Models

Just have to tweak it a bit and you can get the 1998 data from Polarisman.

Click on any of the years (1997 works fine) then change the 1997 to 1998 in the title bar. It will take you to the 1998 specs.

OP, any clutch off of any Polaris triple will work on your sled. Just use the springs and weights for your year and you're golden. An XLT is an XLT is an XLT. There's a zillion of 'em out there!

I guess that one number in the part number could be anything. 0971_76

The number may be completely worn off, it looks like a 0, but it is different from the first 0.

If that is the case, it really does look like someone replaced the hood or at least the graphics/stickers.

To determine which engine is has, look at the cylinder base behind the clutch.
It will have some letters - ## - letters.
If the number is 58 it is a 580 and if the number is 60 is is the 600.

The model number on the tunnel is 0971_6 which if that _ is a 1 that would indicate a 97 XC 600. That is what I think it is. The 97XC would have had the XLT monoblock triple (with number EC580-008 just like you have) and is a 597cc engine. SO I am 100% sure that is what you have. The 97XC600 had the "racer" seat and tank combo and the tunnel graphics match as well as all of the trailing arm decals and the white hood.

The hood graphics are a stock/custom mash-up based on the "spruce goose" (one year sled) 1997 SKS 700. They had the 600 part made and left a few of the pieces off but you can clearly see what it was based on.

Why do you need to buy a new clutch? I would find a good used one from an XLT and use your weights (rarely go bad, might need pins though) and a new spring. Much, much cheaper than new OEM...

Thank you EVERYONE, for the help here. It is an XC frankinmyth. To answer your question Ridgerunner, I'm lucky enough to live 14 miles from the home of Polaris, and finding parts here is not as challenging as it may be in other locations. The clutch in this machine is worn beyond reasonable repair and this sled has 7xxx+ miles on it. My next door neighbor built the race clutches for polaris, and said he wouldn't build this one, or balance it. I took the sled for a 1/4 mile test run and this sled really has good manors(up to 40MPH), when the clutch took a deep steamy $hit. By way of a back door inheritance, 4 sleds appeared in my yard, all of them polaris, so this will be a good winter project for me. I've already completed the 440 Supersport, and am nearing the finish line with this xc. My other neighbor sweet talked me out of the 1990 400 l/c, but it was pretty rough and a little beyond my skill level. The 440 indy sport became the donor, so I'll have 2 pretty nice machines and a fair amount of parts to draw from. While the seats are tough, the previous owner must have been a pretty meticulous mechanic. All the sleds had very very high mileage, and not one spec of dirt, or sludge in any of the carbs, and every machine started with just a couple short tugs after sitting in my yard for a year and all i did was drain down the tanks and added fuel. Haven't found a loose shaft or bearing yet, just some worn shocks and this clutch issue.
Thanks again everyone. I have read thousands of threads on this forum to date, and what a nice group of folks here. Hope I can be as helpful to some of you.
