My father in laws friend has a 2002 Polaris 600 Touring and the engine just blew on it over the weekend. I have an opportunity to get this snowmobile. I like to tinker around with engines and thought about accepting this snowmobile and finding a used engine to put in it or a block to replace the old one. Asked why he thinks the engine is blown and he said because their is a hole in the cylinder wall. I guess that would do it. My question for you guys is what engines should I think about using or are compatible with this sled? I haven't seen the sled yet, but have been told it's in excellent condition outside of the motor being bad. Where are some good places online that I should check out for purchasing a used engine?

Thanks

cylinders can be replaced. May not be all that expensive to fix. The main thing is crank damage. If the crank is okay, then everything else is not that expensive. Cranks can run up to $1000, but typical twins are $500-700 to rebuild.

The 600 is usually pretty durable, as well. Most of 'em go a long time without failure, so when you get it back together, there's a pretty good expectation of a long life.

If nothing else, part it out. There are a lot of parts that are pretty easy to sell, such as the track/suspension and trailing arms/skis.

I just received the snowmobile. I got it for $100. This thing is great condition minus the engine. The engine is seized up. i removed the heads and one of the cylinders had little chunks of metal in it sitting on top of the piston. Some were the size of chocolate chips. I removed the exhaust and then i saw the wide 3" long vertical crack under the exhaust port. I posted a wanted ad on craigslist looking for a used engine. What size, year engine should I go with if i am starting over? Are there any other places besides craigslist and ebay I should be looking to find an engine?

Someone just responded to my craigslist ad. He sent me a video of the engine running. He believes it's a 91 with 6,XXX miles on it but the previous owner rebuilt it. Said he would sell it for $400. What do you guys think?

You will need all the electronics for the 91 and it won't be a seamless fit into the 2000. The 91 is a Fuji engine, the 2000 is made by Polaris. Polaris didn't use a twin cylinder 600 in 91; if it's a 600 (or 650) it will be a triple. If it's a twin, it's probably a 500 (488cc). I'd keep searching for a twin around the same year. Conversions never go easy.

Where are you in Wisconsin. Someone close to you maybe able to look at it an give you some advise. They may even have some spare parts they would let go.

I am in Racine
