Polaris Quad

Someone I know is selling an old Polaris quad. It's been sitting at least a couple years, although it was inside/sheltered from the weather. She's saying it needs a new battery and tires and that's all... but she's no mechanic.

Can anyone ID this? From the picture it's a Trail Boss, if that's a model. It's definitely a Polaris. I wanna guess from the color scheme that it's mid-90s, but that is a total guess.

She wants $500. Any opinions on that?

It is a Trail Boss made by Polaris. I have driven a 2x4 Trail Boss before and thought it did just fine... My Bro bought a 2003 Yamaha Blaster from Hay Days for $750.00 and that is a six speed manual. This is a Grandpa ATV.

The tires look great! If anything, you may need to tube them or fix a nail or two.

$500.00 is too steep in non-running condition. It will run without a battery, you'll have to pull start it. If it fires and runs, test the 4x4, etc... If it starts, runs, etc... and everything works, I'd put down $350.00- 400.00. I am putting this at a late 80s, early 90s ATV. It does not look like it has been kept inside, due to the sun fading.

Why are they selling it?

They work like a sled does regarding the clutch... so they do get up and move... and again, I am speaking a 2x4 model. I have driven both 2 and 4 stroke. The 4 is quiet, but not near as snappy as the 2.

Its being sold because she is moving to NC and doesn't want to spend the $ to transport it. It was her fathers, and he passed away a couple years ago. She hasn't used it. I think when she meant it was stored inside she meant for the years she had it; just her way of saying it wasn't totally abandoned to rot.

She has an '84 Honda Big Red 3 wheeler too...

I was thinking myself I'd offer her $250, just because I don't NEED it. My father is getting a Side by Side for next summer, so this would really just be a tinker toy. Maybe I'll up it to $350... but based on the interest in her post on Facebook I doubt she'll have trouble finding a buyer at $500.

So.. now I have to ask.. What is a "2x4"???? Is that part-time 4wd or something? Like, lockout hubs?

What's the likely engine in this thing? A 250? I don't see any markings on the thing itself (which usually means you don't want to know... )

Would it be a 2-cycle most likely?

Hmmm... Looks like an '87 Trail Boss. Quite a bit older than I thought:

Yea... Two Stroke then! Engine is prob. a 250-330, maybe a 350CC.

2x4 means it is only two wheel drive out of the 4 wheels. This has 4x4 so you can engage it at any point to have all 4 wheels turning.

Carb will need cleaned after sitting that long as well....

Hard to say what to offer since she got it from her Dads and may not want to let it go cheap, but go over there, pull the plug, dump some fuel into it, make sure all switches are on and pull it over. If it pops or fires.... offer up $350-$400 and be happy! If it does not pop over, offer less.

I was just reading backwards... This quad would have a centrifugal clutch? Hmmm. Interesting.
