So in route to the ice shack my 2000 mxz ran good then died right off ! I was wearing some extreme cold weather military choppers and thought I hit the kill switch. Nope , but it fired on the first pull with lights on . Another 100 ft or so it killed again, lights die after the motor kills ? Another 5 or so times with the same. I checked the plugs they looked good and had spark ? After the first kill and the last the time it kept running the distance got shorter . So this novice is guessing ?

1. Fuel filter ? ( if so where the heck is it ? ) I tried to trace it ?

2 Fuel pump ? ( I found that and it looks like a pain to change ? )

Any who,, I figured I could get a good word here as I always have !

Thank you !

I had a bunch of water in the gas once, it would act the same way. It I let it sit for 10 minutes it would run for a while (3-4 minutes) then do just what yours is doing. Drain the bowls into a clear container and wait a minute to see if water separates from the gas.

Yes I drained the bowls, the gas was clear and no water separation when I put it in a glass and let it sit. I have looked all over for a kit and no luck. The only place I could find a pic of the pump was on ebay. Maybe thats why there are so many used ones on there as u cant buy a rebuild kit ! LOL I may have to get an after market double , the dealer sells the OEM for $85 and the after market pump is $ 35 ?

So I installed an after market pump and ......... The exact same thing ? Kills after a minute or two. But after it killed I pulled the plugs and they were dry but had spark. So I tried to pull start it again and nothin. I then gave it half throttle and pulled it and it started ! But again died 1 minute riding. So Carb issues ? Definately a ghost in the machine ! LOL

This being broke would act like a broken pump, because the impulse line is what moves the diaphram in the pump to pump the gas. Shorter the impulse line the better so if it has alot of slack cut it a little shorter.

I had someone suggest checking the compression on the motor as low compression may not operate the impulse hose to the pump ? Whats your thoughts ? What should the PSI on a 440 be ? Should the throttle be wide open when pulling with the tester on it ? Thanks again !

120-130 is a good range for all sled engines. 110 isnt too bad but 50 is wayyyyyy low. Your looking at new pistons and rings. Take the head off and look at the cylinder walls. If they look good no gouges or grooves, they will be fine. I would also buy any gasket you take off during the job. Good luck...
