Rod end for left tie rod

I'm a novice here, so be patient. I have a 2001 Polaris Indy 340 and recently broke the rod end attachment to the left ski off. I purchased a new rod end for $37 at the local dealer thinking it will be an easy fix. But now seeing that the piece is actually two pieces that make a joint into the tie rod, I'm not sure. Any help out there, or does this make sense to anyone.

Here's a link to the Polaris website so you can see a diagram of your sled.

To replace the radius rod ends on the front, remove the old one from the spindle, remove it from the rod. If you broke the rod too, you will have to remove the other end, which is a real bugger, especially if your sled has a belly pan protector. When you install the new rod end, make sure the rod length remains the same.

If you broke the end of the steering tie rod, that rod has two Heim joints that are opposite threaded. If you bent that rod, you will have to gain access to both ends of the rod to loosen the lock nut. Rod length is even more critical, any variation will mess with the ski alignment and can cause handling problems.

not following whate you mean by 2 pieces? Polaris tie rod ends are a one piece heim joint, one left had thread and one right hand thread per side, on some models the inner ball of the heim joint has a stud built into it so you just spin a nut on it, the others have a 3/8 hole in it for a bolt to go through.

i'm out of my expertise here. On the parts catalog it is the actual rod end that broke. One end goes into the top of the ski and the other goes into a black rod. How do i remove the old broken rod end and replace the new. Both ends are threaded and probably opposite threads. probably should have taken the sled in, but my husband is out of town and wanted to get it fixed b4 he got back into town.

There are three rods on each side of the sled. Two are in front of the ski spindle, they are the radius rods. The one to the rear of the ski spindle is a steering rod. So we can all be on the same page, which one is broken? Got pics?

If the rods are not bent, usually a break in any of the ball joints (heim) leaves a part of the heim joint screwed into the aluminum rod. To replace the broken end of the heim joint, loosen the remaining lock nut on the rod, that should allow you to remove the threaded part of the heim joint from which ever rod. Then remove the nut that holds the other part of the broken heim joint on the ski spindle. When replacing, you can get alignment pretty close by looking at the number of threads that were screwed into the rod and install the new one the same depth. Install the new joint in the rod then bolt it back onto the spindle.
