I was thinking about getting a 2003 Yamaha RX1. I am also considering getting a 2002 Yamaha viper. what would be a better buy? I am currently riding a 98 srx 600. I love the way the sled feels. i also like to go fast so i can beat my friends in drags. I do a lot of trail riding and I also do some ditch banging, but I have not had the best luck with that the past year because I totaled my 01 sxr 600. and at the end of the season I broke the trailing arm, control arm, and the radius rods on the right side and I am looking for a new sled and wondering what a better buy would be. thanks for the suggestions/help!

The RX1 is crazy fast for speed, but because of the weight of the engine, it doesn't make a very good ditch banger. If you broke the sxr, you would DESTROY the RX1. Of those two, I think the Viper would hold up a little better. An Assault or Pro-X may be a better option for those big ditches. Not sure which versions of Cat or Doo will take that kind of punishment, someone will chime in :)

viper's performance will be similar to the SRX 700, they are very similar engines. From what I've heard, the RX-1 is a very hard pulling sled that just "has torque". As in, at any speed, you punch the fun flipper and hold on. The downfall is the weight, as they are around 570 or so lbs dry. The 4 strokes seem to go forever too, there are over a dozen that I have seen on craigslist the last month with over 11k miles on them.

I almost bought an RX1 the year after they came out. Wow. If you have a need for speed, that will fill it! I remember one of those went 137 mph through the 1/4 mile and it was stock! I opted to go for the powder sled instead... good choice! I would probably be dead now!!

For the twisties/groomed trails, the RX1 is a great sled. If set up properly it turns with ease. Has plenty of power to take on your friends. If ditch bangin', like others have said, it's a lot of sled to be throwing around.... The 4 stroke will virtually last forever.....

The 2002 Viper was it's first year and was built off the SRX platform. And will be lighter than the RX1.

just for clarity, vipers and srx's are completely different sleds. hard to even compare them in the same sentence. stock for stock, a viper wont hold up to an srx in a straight line, but the srx cant take the bumps and ditches like the viper. however, the 02 viper had some issues with suspension calibrations and depending on how particular you are, you may or may not notice. yamaha addressed this issue in the service bulletins.

choosing between the rx and the viper, hands down the viper, for what you describe as your riding style and what your accustomed to riding. similar ride and feel to the sxr, equivilent to your srx only like it was on steroids when you hit the happy flipper.
