I joined the Snowmobile forum as in doing my research related to the purchase of a decent used sled, this forum seemed to have the most current information from a variety of members. My sled for the past few years has been a 1984 Skidoo Formula SS25 which I just sold as I was having great difficulty getting parts, and it was uncomfortable to ride for a 70 year old. i am now looking at two used Polaris sleds. The first is a 2003 Edge X700 121 track, 1.25 lugs with approx. 5000 kms (3200 miles) on it. The top end has been redone by a polaris mechanic. It has mechanicalreverse, hand and thumb warmers and is second owner. Looks to be in real good shape all around. the other sled is a 2004 Edge 600 Vertical Escape 136 track,2 inch lugs with approx 2500 kms. has electric start and mechanical reverse with warmers. I intend to do mostly trail, lake and field riding for deeper snow. Any advice on which sled would best suit and any reliability issues with either the 2003 700 motor or the 2004 600 motor would be appreciated. Also want a sled that is comfortable to ride. Thanks guys,
Both are pretty good choices, but I would choose the longer track of the 600. Back in the day, a 136" was considered a longer track; now a lot of people are seeing the advantages of a bit longer than the "normal" 121" track on the trails. A bit longer track helps bridge the "stutter bumps" and gives a nicer ride. In the deeper snow, it's no contest. Go for the longer track.
If I remember, the 2004 Vertical Escape was a "Snow Check" sled and should have had an upgraded shock package. It should also have electronic reverse and not mechanical. The standard sled was a Vertical Edge; both are versions of the RMK (Rocky Mountain King.)
The 700 VES Liberty engine puts out about 130 hp in stock form, the 600 is right around 118 or so. Both are pretty durable, but the 600 small block edges out the 700 big block in that category. The 600 with electric start is a nice thing to have, especially if you do a lot of stop and go. It's nice not having to be pulling the rope all the time!
Good luck on your choice. Condition of the sleds and a record of maintenance should be your deciding factor. Ask when the shocks were done and when the last time the clutches were gone through. Make sure to check the carbides on the skis and the condition of the track hyfax. 2500 km is not many miles at all... that would be a big factor for me. There should be a lot of life left in that engine!
Welcome!
I went from a 121 to the 136 and am now upgrading most of my short track sleds to a bit longer track!
As an Old Fart I can say the 136 is a lot more comfortable all the way around.
And with reverse you will wonder how you ever rode that old sled!
