Mountain Sleds

I'm planning atrip to the mountains in January. Being from Duluth, MN I am not too familiar with mountain sleds. Anyone with any input: Who makes the best mountain sled and why?

Well they are definitely a totally different sled especially depending on the size track/motor you get. If you've riden sleds before then it won't be too big of a different other than having insane traction in the powder. But realistcally it's all about your preferance. If I were you I'd check out the few models offered, then make a decision from there. Pretty much anyone is going to be byist to their company of choice

I have been riding sleds for about 14 years now, but only on groomed trails and ditchbangin. I am really pupmed to go out and experience the world of mountain riding. I think Polaris is the way to go from what I have heard. My buddy that lives out there has an RMK 800, I just want to be able to keep up with him.

Don't discount the Ski-doo Summit, the AC Mountain Cat or M7, or even a Yamaha Apex or RS Vector Moutain; all are good sleds. Even the crossovers such as the Switchback, the Crossfire, or the Attak from Yamaha are very good with track lengths thatmeet or exceed what pure mountain sleds had just a few years ago.

I'm partial to my Polaris, but any of the others will give you a trip to remember! You may want to look at the Polaris 600 HO, in the IQ chassis, it is really making some heads turn.. it has gobs of power and is lots lighter than an Edge 800.. some say it's the sled that should have been released instead of the IQ 900 last year...

Except for the yamahas, They all are pretty decent sleds. Lots of copying seems like. I like the arctic cats, but ive spent some time on a summit rev and i gotta say its pretty damn nice.

Sorry to tell you this but if your buddy lives and rides in the mountains I do not think you will be able to keep up with him for awhile atleast. I ride in the Moutains and would love to go some place where there are no mountains and try riding on flat ground for a change. I have a Ski-Doo Summit 800HO 151" track and can go anywhere I want to in the Mountains. It would probably be a dog on flat ground.

Pick your flavor. If your going out for a week or so, try renting one of each. That way you can compare your riding style to the sled. See if those magazine comparisons have any truth to them. All my friends ride Polaris, so I haven't gotten to try anything else. I know this is going to sound bad, but I wouldn't mind giving an M7 a try.

We rented some 700 Switchbacks 144 and they were probably the most all around best sled I have ever riden. Great on the trails and great off trail aswell
Rented 800 Summit Revs 151 last year, they were tanks on the trails but in the powder they would go anywhere.
One thing I would plan on taking if you are going to be riding off trail is a shovel, you will probably need it. Me and the guys I ride with learned this the hard way
