Smile Minneapolis to Cooke City

I have recently moved from North Dakota to the Minneapolis area, an I am looking at going on a snowmobile trip to Cooke City, Montana this winter. I am trying to plan the trip but I do not know which is the fastest way to take. It looks like I-94, I-90, or US-12 are my options. Any suggestions from the people on this website from the Minnesota or western Wisconsin?

Thanks.

MN To Cooke City

Double D -
IMO your best bet is to take I-90 and cut over to Cody, WY. Then through Yellowstone to Cooke City. You can get there on I-94 too, but you have to come South from Billings to Cody and it'll take longer. Remember, the Beartooth Pass from Red Lodge, MT to Cooke City is closed during the winter so you'll have to cut through Yellowstone at some point. The other thing is you may want to check that the roads in Yellowstone are open from Cody to Cooke City. It's been a few years since I've been there so things may have changed.
Good Luck, have a great trip!

Another idea is get to Cody,go north on 120,then hwy 296.You will come to a big parking lot for snowmobilers to leave their pick-ups and trailers. This is where the plow stops.I also recommend getting there in the daylight because the road is curvy and alot of deer. You have to ride in the last few miles but it's hwy 212 groomed and wide.We pull a sled behind one snowmobile with extra food and gear. Also if your going to go to top of the world it's nice to have extra gas at the parking lot or even trailer them east to save gas those few miles. If you've never been to Cooke you'll love it.Take a GPS and go where the tracks end.Cooke City sinclair has a good web site with cool winter pics. Be sure to check them out.
