Dumb idea or Genius?

Ok I have an old sled. 95 EXT powder special 580, I am thinking of going from a 136 to a 151 track. Is this an insane idea on such an old sled? I was going to use rail and tunnel extensions and a new track. I can't afford 12,000 for a new sled.

151" will be a lot for that 580 to pull. If you do it, expect to regear to be able to keep the track turning on the hills or in the powder. You won't be winning the race to the top, but if you don't mind the loss of top-end, it could be a fun project!

top end isn't important to me. I did 70 on this sled and that was plenty fast for me. Most of where I go I don't go over 40. I know its not ideal but it would be a good way to learn about sleds

If you like to work on projects might not be a bad idea. If you are looking for a differance look into a 144 track, 151 would be too much on the climb. Just keep in mind it will put more wear and tare on the engine due to added weight and grip.

If geared right your 580 will pull a 151" just fine. You may lack on the hillclimbs but it will be just fine in the deep stuff. If you are afraid you wont have enough power I would do a clutch kit, get the power you already have to the ground better. The only thing is your going to be putting out some pretty descent coin for this conversion so you need to consider whether its worth it to do it or not on this old of a sled.

Well if I was doing this conversion I would start with what track you are getting. If its a deeper lugged track than the one you currently have on you will need to figure out if your tunnel will accept it. If not you could go with a D&R(drop and role) of the chain case or maybe a smaller tooth driver, if you went with a smaller driver you probably wouldnt have to gear it down so thats killing two birds with one stone. Then figure out if you want to do an extension or get longer rails. I would personally go with a extension but full rails are always stronger. I would also put some drop brackets for the back of the suspension for a better angle of attack then bolt er up! If your worried about not having enough power look for a clutch kit and maybe some other bolt up mods you could do.

You will also have to dial in both of your clutches to get it to pull that long of a track. As mentioned before, you may be a little short on power.

I wouldn't do it on a sled that size. Get something bigger before you go through all that work
