You guys install studs?
Do you mountain riders install studs on your tracks even with your 2" or so inch paddle tracks?
Are there pre-studded mountain tracks available that have the stud installed at the end of the tread?
Thanks.
Take it easy.
Fred

You mean at the end of the paddle? Camoplast makes one.

Mountain tracks usually have lugs that are at least 2". If you were to stud the track, the studs would have to stick out farther than the track, and the weight and length of the stud would cause a TON of tear-throughs.
I have yet to see any track with 2" lugs with studs on, they just don't work out west.
The Camoplast "Ice Claw" track has studs in the fingers, much like a studs in a car tire, but the track lug length is usually 1". There are mountain "finger" tracks that look similar to where the studs would go on a Camoplast track, but they are not studded.

Sleds made for deep snow don't need metal type studs since cooling and keeping the track lubed with snow in not a problem. Mountain sleds need to stoot snow like a jet ski in water since there is little traction in the deep stuff. Soft lugs work best in deep snow because they don't dig as much and they whip as they change direction.

The longest studs normally that you'll see are the ones on snowcross tracks which are 1 5/8" lugs. I believe their studs are either 1 5/8" or 1 3/4", depending on regulation. If you ARE going to put studs in a mountain track, go with something like that, that has the long nuts on it to prevent bending, but rip outs are going to happen no matter what, which is why now they use double studs on a double sized backer, to try and prevent this.

if your riding a mountain sled w/ 2" track, studs will be useless. i wouldnt even bother. your track spins a ton anyway in the powder, its not like you need the "hook up" like a trail rider, or a lake racer.

Studs on a 2" paddle track is like my wife putting on make-up......it doesn't help, at all!
Never seen or heard of anyone here in western Canada doing that gig. We get very little for icy conditions around here which studs appear to be intended for.

You try to reduce weight on mountain sleds, not add it.

Dude, you dont need studs in the mountains for riding. They would do you more harm than good. You rarely ride in snow conditions that you could actually use them. Plus the fact that if your sled lands on you and the studs get to you, your going to be in a world of pain. Camoplast makes a good finger track that is awesome in hardpack or spring riding. Thats about as far as I would go.
