Arctic Cat M8 or Ski-Doo 800R???

I have been riding for a skidoo summit 600 for about 4 years and I am looking to step up to a more aggressive/capable mountian sled. I'm 6'4" 200lb and spend most of my time riding the trees looking for powder, but i ride trails too. I live in colorado, and ride at about 9000 ft.

I have narrowed my choices to either a skidoo summit 800R or an arctic cat m8.

I was looking for some UNBIASED opinions on these two sleds. I know the Doo has 10 more horsepower and is 15lb lighter, and the Cat has the longer track.

I will be buying one of these two sleds in the next two weeks, and i cant decide!

I ride polaris so I hope that is un-biased enough Welcome to the boards by the way.

I myself would have a hard time picking between the two, since your summit is pre-rev you may want to log some hours on a rev before making the big decision. If it were me personally I would probably end up with the doo. Everyone I know with a rev can't say anything bad about it. And I've seen them perform well in the mountains.

i think that both sleds would be great! the doo is hard to get used to sometimes because it is so narrow. when i ride my friends rev i feel like i'm going to tip over. i havn't heard much on the M8?

With the 800's the doo would be my choice and it has the wider track to make up for float. If it were me I would spend the extra money for the m1000with the 162 track. I hope to see someone on this sled to see if the hype is real in the good reviews it is getting.

9000 feet, might do your homework on yamaha, reviews I have read say they do well in high altitude, but they are hevy.

I think the sleds will be okay.

My reading on the subject says you should consider a 2007 Polaris Dragon.

For what reviews I read in sled magazines the 700 cc dragon stock will beat most stock 800 cc sleds.

Of course I don't know the bias of the magazines.

I am sure the only way a person could get a dragon was by snowcheck last spring, so a rider can't pick one up today. A magazine I read said good sled but is not light and costs a lot for a 700cc. Also the track is only a 155 inch and powder junkies what bigger tracks.

i was reading in snow goer and they had many good things to say about the skidoo mxz 800R. the one thing its very good for is snow x or a very agressive rider.

personally, between the two, id go with the skidoo.

I have an 2006 m7 153 and my parents have 2005 revs 151's . I know the difference to now is quite substantial, but maybe i can give an unbiased comparison of this generation. I love my m7, and to be quite honest, i like my parents revs. I feel as though the m7 is quite a bit more unstable when we are cruising on the trails to get to the fresh stuff, compared to the rev. On the other hand, I feel as though it is quite a bit more easy for me to turn in the fresh stuff than the revs and have had some others say the same thing. Now this is just hopping from one to the other, so maybe with some time the rev would be just as easy. To be quite honest, I feel as though you would not be let down with either sled. On my m7 it has efi, which is a nice feature since I also live and ride in colorado, so it adjusts like a charm moving from low to high altitude and vice versa. I would go with which one I could get a better deal on, if I were in your situation. The other thing is if you like creature comforts, definitly go for the doo since it has more of this type of stuff where as the m series is more stripped down. Hope this helps.

Dont they only put the 800R in the Summit chassis right now???

Buy the REV and ride it for 600 miles before you give up on it. They take a while to get used to, but you will love it.

just bought a m8 and love it...200 miles + and has ran flawless so far. However if you ride trails, Id consider a crossfire...just rode with last years firecat 700 and he smoked everyone down the trails and bombed in the steep and deep too!

The track length shouldn't be much of an issue either. the 16x151 is the same as a 15x161. Otherwise, test drive and buy whatever you like the best. besides, everyone here is biased. lol

I used to rid cat and have never been a fan of polaris since they started the Liberty engines. I now have a 99 skidoo summitx 670. The last time I was out I went to a hill we call fiberglass hill(for good reason) We had 2ft fresh powder and an uncut hill. I ride with some friends who have brand new polaris rmk800 159 and cat m7 162. The rmk high marked annd I matched him and I'm only running 136. The rmk rider jumped on the m8 and could only get within about 40 ft of high mark, same rider remember. The a cat did not impress me and still has not on any ride. I ride with revs also and they impress me more and more every trip. Once you comform to the rev style they are very hard to beat. It's all mountain riding where I am and you can look in the papers and it's loaded with rmks for sale and the revs are the machine of choice. I don't own one cause my old summit x 136 will take me far enough to get into trouble and if I had a rev I know I would push it too far and end up broken or dead, but from serious mt riders here, the rev is the machine this year.

Two words, RIDER FORWARD. For mountain climbing the rev is nasty, my friend has one and will high mark over a rx-1 mountain with a boondocker kit in it. The way it is positioned keeps the machine floting better.

weight

All things being equal look at the weight to hp ratio. It's time to kick but and take names.
I ride the San Juans : )
