help choosing a sled

k here it goes. i need to find a seld and i hoping to be pushed in the right direction. i know this isnt a lot to work with but here it goes. i'd like to buy a sled before i move out west. i plan to use this sled on powder in the mountains and the trails. i'd also like to get something in and around the 98 era. what does everyone suggest? i dont know all that much about sleds and i know the older sleds are not going to match up to the new ones but money is a factor. i have a few ideas of what i think would be a good sled for me. first of all i'd like it to be light. the lighter the better. i ride motocross so i'd pefer a seld in that direction. yes i know they are not even close but this is what i mean. eg. light, quick but doesnt need to high of a top speed and good suspension. i know, buy a newer one. what size engine and track do you think i need. i was thinking a 6 or 7hundy at first, but i dont know if thats good enough. i weight 200 and i'll prolly have a good amount of gear with me. say, total 250. i'll probably mess around with the sprokets anyway. please give me any input you can. oh, does it need to be injected? thanks in advance to anyone who replies

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to look around and view some previous discusions about what sled to buy.

You say .. first of all i'd like it to be light. the lighter the better.

The cheapest way to do this is remove all the unecessary plastic cosmetic items. Even the windshield.

The second cheapest is to replace the manufacturer EPA can (exhaust silencer) with a lighter one. Most aftermarket cans are lighter since they were no EPA certified with the original sled.

I would say a light sled is in the 375 to 475 pound area.

Sled suspensions are designed for 180 to 210 pound person with gear.

So what kind of riding. mostly powder, speed on the trail. jumping?

Some one will correct me if I an wring but most people (at leat in videos) like jumping with ski-doo.

For snow the RMK chasis is good,

There are guys on here knowing lots more than I about the 90's era sleds to give you good advice. Hope they chime in and help.

For gearing you will have to look at what local riders are doing to get it setup for the sled/snow conditions for your area.

hey
hows it goin?
first of all if your 200 pounds your gonna want a motor that can pull that weight around
I would go with a 700 at the smallest for you
if your gonna want to play in the deep stuff your gonna want a long track but if your gonna be riding the trails and jumping you dont want one to long so I would suggest a 136" or 144"
I am a huge skidoo guy so id tell you to go with a 99 summit or somethin in that erea..............the zx chasis's are great chasis and they may not be as responsive as the new sleds like the revs but they still will do good

if you want to go start shoping for a mountain sled go to Snowmobile Information From SnoWest Magazine
they have a great classified's section with tons of mountain sleds
good luck on getting a machine man

Best sled ever

I had a '98 Polaris 700 RMK that I sold a year or so ago. It was the best sled I ever owned and I kick my self in the (fill in the blank) everytime I think about it. The young guy who bought it though is a great rider and has made it run even better. It is about as reliable as one can get...and I too weigh in the 200+ range.
