recoil

my recoil is going on my snowmobile, and i was wondering if it is a hard task to replace it on my own.

What's "going" on it? Most things are very easy to do.

when i pull on the cord. it slips and doesnt catch all the time. and every once in a while the whole cord will come out and not recoil.

Sounds like you just need to remove it and spray it down really well with a good lubricant.
