Silencer
I have a 2002 Yamaha SXViper 700, and sometimes when I'm going like 25MPH, the noise level is just rediculous and sometimes even hurts my ears. So I decided that I'm going to purchase a silencer but after reading the product description, a few questions arose. (The silencer I'm looking at can be found here: http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/produc...eafCatId=31202)
In the product description, it says - Durable silencers reduce weight and boost performance without an increase in noise levels
- Power Increase: 4 hp
First off... How does adding a piece of metal to my sled reduce weight? And secondly, is it true that it will boost my performance? Even if it doesn't do either of those, I will still be happy that it does what it's really meant to do: Reduce the amount of noise put out by my sled.

well first off you are a little misinformed at what a silencer does.
to address your thinking that it will make the sled quieter, dont even begin to think that. The only thing a silencer does is make it sound a little different, and often it sounds even louder; however it will not get quieter.
The weight loss occurs because you are getting rid of the stock silencer or muffler(whatever you want to call it) and replacing it with one that is meant to be made of either a lighter metal or has less metal to make it.
you might gain a little bit of power from the less restrictive design of the aftermarket silencer.
so just remember that silencer simply means muffler. when you replace a muffler on a car with an aftermarket one it is often louder and might get a very little bit of power. this is the same deal. you will only get lucky if the silencer is the same sound level as stock.

rollinredcavi if you read the full description on dennis kirk then you would see this: SLPs Era 2000 Silencing Technology produces better power with community-friendly sound levels
Most silerncers like rollinred said do not make them "silenced" they actually make them louder, but from the sounds of this one, it really does quiet it down.
Do you have the stock pipes/can on your sled right now? Because thats probably as quiet as it will get!

Silencers are mostly for attaching after expantion cambers/tuned pipes(same thing)....

Hmm... My friend was riding it around my field and it didn't sound very loud, but when it's really loud is when I'm sitting on it and going around 15 - 25MPH. It's very high pitched and almost sounds like a jet accelerating.

yeah i understand that is sounds like that. I wasnt trying to sound rude, if I did. I was just trying to make sure he understood that it wont quiet the sound. Thats really why I hate the word silencer. Just makes it sound like your quieting things.
"community-friendly" as stated in the at means that it will allow you to put on an exhaust mod that doesnt sound as loud as pipes do. We all know how loud pipes are and that is the only point they are making in saying community-friendly.
Sleds are going to be loud. You really cant do much about it. I know a lot of guys that wear ear plugs.

well, you could get some of that foam that quiets sound, and line your hood with it, couldnt you? it's not made for snowmobiles, so mabye the heat would mess it up...
we thought about doing this with my 500, but it turns out it has an exhaust leak (which we knew), and the clutch is engaging too high. we didnt know this because the hood was off, and it seemed like it took too much throttle, but was hard to tell.
