MI Riders! Thinking of a Loud Can??
Might want to reconsider.....taken from a thread on HCS (dated 3/14).
"gov. granholm (d) signed into law today pa 530. snowmobiles mfg. 1980 and newer will have to meet noise decibel standards. 50% of michigan snowmobile trails are on private property. (leased) mi senate passed 37 -0 mi house 82-5."
*Jan. 2004 SAE J2567 stationary test overview: The sound meter microphone is placed 4 feet above the ground, inline with the exhaust outlet/center point of multiple exhaust outlets, on the side of the snowmobile toward which the exhaust is directed, 4 meters distance from the snowmobile longitudinal centerline. The operator holds the brake during the test, starts and runs the engine up to normal operating temperature, then slowly opens the throttle until a steady 3,750 to 4,000 rpm is achieved for not less than 4 seconds. The test is immediately repeated and the two readings averaged.

No need for loud cans. Now the Gov. needs to get the economy rolling.

How much will this cost to implement?
Also, where must this be done? Will peole have to trailer their sled 200 miles to go to a certified db meter station?
Are the db meters calibrated?
I see issues here that I think people don't think about. I don't think this is a bad thing, I am just wondering how much this is going to cost people.

I always say if you can hear a gun shot when your sled is running you need louder pipes

I like where this guy is going. I understand why people don't like loud pipes don't get me wrong, but I also don't understand why people make such a big deal out of it. Harleys and cust. bikes are loud as all hell and people just say what ever to it, why care so damn much about sleds?

Because guys with loud pipes on sled seem to ride around in circles in front of somebody's house pissing them off.
I get that with a couple kids on piped wheelers on the gravel road out front. I pay attention to where I ride and what exaust note I am playing when near civilization so as to not make others annoyed. Something I think a lot of people do not do.
I have loud pipes, but I also do not ride on private lands and the like. They aren't super loud, but loud enough.

Cause harleys are on the roads and sleds are not.
Especially at night and closer to some homes.

I do see your pionts, but I live in the twin citys, so thats like all you hear all the time, that or the 16-18 year old kids with daddys truck that they hack the muffler off and make the truck sound like sh*t, and they never have the truck under 4,000 RPM no mater what. Because then no one would hear there sweet STOCK truck. But I do understand were you guys are coming from.

I know in MN if your truck is louder that like 75 db thats to loud but I think for sleds its around 100-120 db. Look at it this way, if your sled is louder than your lawn mower or chain saw its probably to loud and won't pass.

An out of town cop from Sault St Marie charged my buddy 130$ for the exact can I have on my sled he was in the middle of nowhere no one to bother, had a trail permit and everything, the president of our loacal club that was sledding with the cop was telling him they don't give tickets for that stuff around here but the Soo cop still charged him and tried to make him turn around go home and change it. My buddy took the ticket told him where he can put it and said I'm not turning back I paid my money to be here and I just paid my money to be loud and he took off....Cop was waiting for him with a radar gun on his way back a few hours later, he never charged him even though he was speeding.
If this law happens around here alot less people will buy passes due to the fact most of us can easly outrun the enforcment sleds before they can enven get a good look at us, and there is way more ungroomed land for us to ride on then the good groomed trails. I personally never had a problem but I was always stopped and checked by locals.
The ones that should get charged for running caned exhaust are those that run around in town at 2am up and down roads cracking it WOT and stuff.

I'm trying to find a used stock can for mine now. Fortunately where I ride around home, noise is not an issue at all but want to be legal for the MI trips. Still haven't found the maximum allowable db level for MI tho either.
