Mackinac Island Ice Bridge

Lots of people are emailing me, wondering about the ice bridge to the island. I will just periodically update this with its status.

We have lots of ice in the water, but it's only forming for about 2 miles out. However, we are working on about a week now of below zero lows and highs of about 10, so it's forming fast now. The ferry might run for about another week or so. If things keep up, we should have solid ice from St Ignace to the Island in about 3 to 4 weeks.

And for those wondering, there is no real ice bridge from Lower Michigan to the Island. Coast Gaurd keeps a shipping lane open most of the time.

I'll keep you posted, once you can ride over here, we'd love to see some riders!

it's supposed to be 20, but people only obey that in town. It's not really enforced on the "center" of the island.

Pic of the "Ice Bridge" from a few years back. "Big Mac" in the background. At that time, locals said ice was 42" thick!

Well, 20 mins after I posted that, I was informed that Arnold Line has stopped running the ferries!

Ice is too thick! Should only be a few weeks now.

I now reside in N Idaho, However I'll never forget the days of making the run to Mackinac. I worked for Boettcher Masonry and we were building alot out there in the winter and we would pull our mixers and equipment over the trail w/ sleds and BOY WHAT A TRIP!
AHH!... The good old days! Now I get mountains to play on. Have fun Guys and Gals!

Not yet. We've had the cold, but the wind has been breaking things up. It does appear that it is solid ice from here to St Ignace though. No idea how thick it is.

5 riders crossed Thursday afternoon for the first time. No word on how thick the ice is, but I know they didn't fall through! X-Mas tress should be up soon.

The ice bridge is open.

Thinest spots are around 4 inches. Everything else is 12 inches plus. There is almost no snow out there so it's very rough, but people are riding. The trees aren't out yet, but if you are familiar with the island, just follow the tracks towards the library. That's where we are getting on and off right now.

Ice bridge only has a week or 2 left so hurry up on over!

Tress are up. No snow out there at all, all grooved ice, but we are running an easy 80+ mph on it.

Be mindfull that about 3/4 of the way from St Ignace there is a nasty pressure crack with a 6 foot diamater puddle of water. There is NO open water underneath just a slushy spot. With a little speed you can catch air though

On the mainland side you can get on right behind The Mackinac Grille
