Minnesota Snowmobile safety permit? over 30?

This one is new to me, so i hope my fellow Minnesotan's can help me out with it.

The last time my wife rode snowmobile was back in the 2000-01 season. that year, they started enforcing a permit deal that people had to take a couse to be abe to ride sled. I forget the age that year, but we didnt have to worry about it.

We are now getting back into sledding this winter and the DNR states the following:

Minnesota Residents
Any resident of Minnesota born after December 31, 1976 must have a snowmobile safety certificate to operate a snowmobile in Minnesota.

Now, seeing I just make it past that deadline, I dont have to worry about it, but my wife misses it my 6 months. Does she really need to take the course? Did all of you have to do the same? Or am i missing a loophole?

One thing i want to make sure, I do not want to break the law, but i want to make sure she wasn't grandfathered in at some other time.

thanks!

i would double check with the DNR by calling them to verify.

that seems like a wierd law to enforce, considering 5 year olds ride around on kitty cats.

reminds me of the PWC permits you have to obtain if your under 16 yrs (or whatever). i had to get one when i was riding PWC's back in the day.

The law is anyone born after 1976 must have a permit. You can also have them send you a CD in the mail and you take the test. You would not need a course then. My bro, gf, and I have all done it that way. $10.00 to cover fees. Good luck on the test, you can only get two wrong and it is a B****

Why don't you both take it together!! It could be fun & will get you in the spirit! One more thing.....a little more knowledge won't possibly hurt!!

I think if you take the safty course you can get a break on your insurance if you insure your sled/sleds, if your like me and don't then it's no big deal.

Well, regardless, anyone born after 76 needs it to ride on trails, ditches, etc. You never see a kid on a kitty kat ditch banging.

I love Alaska. Was born in Northern Minnesota... We don't have stupid regulations like that (well, we have some). What I would do probably isn't allowed to be said here.

How much are ya charging for a copy? We just registered the sleds in MN...now I have to complete the safety course. I think the boy is grandfathered in under some provision in the law.

You do not have to do the safety course. A few of you are not understanding this. If you are over 18, you can just get the CD in the mail from the DNR, take a 30 question test, pass it, and you get your permit. If you are under 18, you have to take a course and then test, and then you can get your permit. The only way you are grandfathered in is if you are born before 1976, otherwise, you are illegally operating a sled.

Thanks for the clarification!! The boy thinks that since he's got his permit in Wisconsin, he doesn't have to get it in MN. Neither the MN Snowmobile Association site nor the MN DNR site were very helpful - I just kept getting "Youth Safety Training" course listings. I thought there was something about a CD, but I couldn't find the info for that anywhere.

Seriously, Jhe - you've just ended a 1.5+ hour headache!

info@dnr.state.mn.us

Email the above address and ask for a snowmobile training CD. They will mail it quickly, then enjoy the sucky test.

Eh, I've got 5 in-class and 2 take-home finals lined up for December anyway; what's one more test? Thanks again for all the information!
