I think it should be legalized.

Probably does a lot more damage than most people know...
I smoked every day, for 3+ years, while I was in the Air Force. Smoked at home, in the car, at work, on the flight line, and in the planes. In 3 years, I didn't miss a day... ever! The only time I wasn't buzzed was when I was sleeping. Even then, I kept a bong by the bed, just in case I woke up. It took a couple years after I got out to finally quit. Now, 20 years later, my short-term memory is shot! I'll walk into a room, and forget why I'm in there. If it weren't for my PDA, I'd never get by at work. I have to write everything down, or I'll forget to do it. I attribute this to my heavy use of pot during those few years.
It's illegal for a reason. If you're smart, you'll stay away from it. Back then, I was young and stupid. At that age, you're living for "today". The hard truth is; tomorrow *will* come, and then you'll have to pay for your stupidity.

I think your memory problem has a little more to do with the fact that you smoked all day every day. I'm very intelligent, and I'm a smoker. Yeah, I have a problem remembering names when introduced to someone, but I always have. I do not smoke all day long, but I have smoked for over 9 or 10 years now. I'm still very intelligent. There's not many things I can't do, can't fix or can't figure out. I'm very successful for my age. I'm doing better and have much more than anyone else in my family at this age, and will probably retire younger than any of them. Then again, It may affect other people differently.

Well... I ddn't say I wasn't intelligent. I'm doing much better than anybody in my family as well. Of my wife's side, who all own their own businesses, I'm the only one who actually owns a house! I am very mechanical as well. I can take almost anything apart (and I do) fix it, and put it back together. Thinking, problem-solving, and logic skills are not a problem. It's not an intelligence issue.
I'm specifically talking about memory... I noticed a sharp decline very shortly after my USAF (smoking) days. I used to be able to remember names and numbers. Almost anything. Shortly after exiting the USAF, I noticed I had a hard time remembering recent things - not childhood memories, but things that happened recently. I had a hard time studying in college, and eventually never finished. I was an "A" student in high school, and in the 9+ months I attended Electronics training school in the USAF. My problems with memory only occurred after those few short years of heavy smoking.
You may be right too; it may affect others differently. Not everyone who takes Ephedra dies from it... Not every teen on anti-depressants commits suicide... If the idea of smoking is to get a thrill, there are far better ways!
To quote PoWeRs "I get my high from skiing fast, Running hard, Swimming strong, and busting my balls on someone at the paintball field." Now that's someone with their head screwed on straight!!!

Thats good. I'm not a real heavy smoker now days, and when I am busy doing something else involving a natural buzz, I could care less about smoking. I just enjoy the buzz mostly around the house or just hanging out, and it calms my anxiety. Your right about "maybe it's worse for you than some people think", but even "more" people think it's worse than it really is. Well, hopefully your effects are not permanent.

Been over 20 years since I quit... I'd say the effects are permanent. Thank God for my Sony CLIE TJ35, and the technology to compensate for poor memory.

I am another one to suffer from short term memory. I smoked all through college and then for a few years after. When I was in school it was an everday, all day thing when I wasn't in class. Well not in any important classes that is. A bunch of buddies and I were getting an Associates degree in "Chemical Dependency" along side our bachelors degree and we used to go to that 3 hour nite class high as kites. We got quite the kick out of talking about drugs with the professor while using the substance he was trying so hard to convince us not to use. Talk about ironic! Unfortunatley, I should have listened as my short term memory is terrible. I drive my wife crazy because I do not remember half the $hit she tells me...of course, now that I think about it...this problem occurs with her the most. hmmmmm.......?
