moped gas tank

i recently bought an old puch moped off my uncle. my bro and i used to ride the sh|t of of them when we were youger. while home this weekend, i saw they were for sale and scooped one up.

the gas tank is really dirty when you look in it. the moped runs on LEADED gasoline and i need to clean the carb.

but, most of the "gunk" getting into the carb comes from the tank. any way of cleaning the tank? scrubbing? spraying it with foam or something?

the moped itself seen alot of action when purchased. then it sat for about 15 years, then we used it for about 3, and then it sat for about 4 untill this weekend. it runs like a champ, but needs some TLC. the gas tank is where im going to start...any suggestions?

oh, the only reason why i know it has gunk in it is because the petcock (on, off, reserve - switch) is gummed up. and sometimes prevents gass from passing through.

Take the tank off and put some marbles in it with a little gas, let it sit a bit to dissolve the varnish, then shake it like you do a bad baby. The marbles will knock loose the chunks and then you can just rinse the tank out.

that is a good idea RJ....however, the gas tank, going from memory, is connected to the down tube. i dont think it can be removed.

the pic is of a similar moped, not the one i have...but this is the closest i can find...gas tank is exactly the same.

Strap that thing to a paint shaker and have at it.
