Digital camera??

I am looking at getting a digital camera, but am way behind in the tech of them. Would anyone know what to look for? I would like to have one that will stand up to the rigors of sleding, dirtbike ing and atving. ie snow, sand, mud, and the inevetable dumping of the rider in all the prementioned. Video would be nice but not required. Any help or opinions? Thanks.

personally, i would go with the cannon power shot SD 1000 (or equivelant) 7.1 mega pixle. ive had cannons forever, and they are a very durable camera. ive taken mine sledding every trip, off roading, camping, and everywhere in between. the metal case has saved my arse many-a-times.

right now, pretty much every digital camera is good for the "average" user. if your not going to print and frame pictures professionally, any camera will do the job. all you have to do is find one you like.

the cannons are very user friendly, then again, they all basically run the same way.

i havent seen any digital camera that doesnt come with the video option. its pretty much standard.

as for the bells and wistles of the camera its self, try and get the highest mega pixle, and once you start using it you can figure out all the in's and out's of adjusting the camera for the best quality. higher the mega pixle the better the camera will be at picture quality.

I use a Kodak "Easyshare" camera, it fits nicely in my pocket and takes nice pictures.
All the pictures of my sleds and some of the other stuff that I posted on any of the threads are from a 2.1 megapixel camera.

if you go with the 7.1 or a 10 mega pixle you should be ok for 3 years or so.

.
that is my main selling point for the dig. cameras. because i dont want to lug around a brick in my pocket too. i like how compact they are with the larger LCD screens.

I have heard thar the LCD screens can be easly damaged in the cold or eaven freeze. one I looked at eaven said " Do not expose to extstream temp." I'm not sure what the extreem temps are.

Thats why I keep it in an inside pocket when not in use. Also makes the battery last longer.(doesn't last long in the cold.)

I just bought a Panasonic 7.1 MP digital, and I absolutely love it. I've taken it mountain biking, hiking, etc. and it holds up well. I bought a soft case I can put on my belt.

[to finish my sentence (i accidently hit reply then got busy at work)]...and i havent had the screen crap out with the extreme temps. i always keep the camera in my fleece vest (innermost layer) when sledding. that way it stays warmer than in the pocket of your sledding jacket.

The more I look , The more options to there are to evaluate. It seems to be a sea of bells and whistles. I have found a OLYMPUS STYLUS 770SW. It is said to be viritualy bulletproof. shock proof, waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof, . It has dual image stabilization, 3x optical zoom, 2.5" LCD display. Thats not all the features just the ones that caught my attention. Sounds nice right ? Well I also see it is $379.00. I dont know if I could justify that kind of expence.

thats the thing...you need to search around for the best price for the camera you want.

i actually need a new camera, and when i seen the cannon 7.1 for 250 it was hard to keep my wallet away form the cash register. imo, id seriously look at the cannons. you wont be disapointed.

We are back From Disney. AS for the digital camera, we opted to get 2 fair ones for the price of one good one. I ended up with a pair of Olympus FE210's. I am very pleased with the pic's that it provided of our trip. It has several features that I don't as of yet understand. I however was able to pick it up and start to take nice pics out of the box with out having read the manual or owned a digital prior. Features that I understand are, 7.1 megapixel, 3X optical zoom, image stabilization, 2.5" LCD and controlable flash.

I can vouch for the kodak cameras too, most of the shots I've posted have been from one, and there has been several times I've forgotten to put it in the inside pocket and it never crapped out. Batteries ran out quick though.
If you like to listen to mp3 player while you ride you might look at the one I just got- Samsung NV3. Plays mp3s(can shoot pics in lower res while listening), plays videos, and is a decent point and shoot camera. Not a great zoom though, which can make a big difference when shooting scenery pics.
You don't need a high dollar camera to take good shots, about all of them make a decent enough picture. If you already have devices that take memory cards you may want to make sure they take the same card. SD cards are pretty popular and getting fairly inexpensive.
