Long tracks are great in fields. Thats why they made long tracks (and for mountains) but a 136" track will still turn fine on trail.

Ha Ha!
Yeah. you kinds need to lean into the corner, especially when cutting a new route. After that you can use the edge of the rut to act like a berm and ride the side or edge which will help you turn.
Still, that 440 is a good size to learn on.

440's are great sleds. I have had a couple through the years, both an AC and a Polaris. Both handled adult riders just fine, but were not so overpowering that the kids couldn't learn the ropes on 'em. Both got great fuel mileage, too.
Nice choice for a first sled! Congrats. Now, where's the pictures?

Haha, it's /that/ kinda forum eh? Love it! The first pic is just after we horsed it onto the trailer, the second is in my garage. Evicted my car to park it.

How do you normally get a sled off a trailer? They're heavy! I used my tractor to sling and lift it so I could drive the trailer out but I can't imagine doing that when I want to take it somewhere to ride.

Most people use trailers that are specifically designed for snowmobiles. Either the trailer tilts or it has a ramp to get the sled(s) on and off. Backing up to a snowbank works too, if there's one available.

One of those Tri-Fold ramps from Tractor Supply would be just right for that trailer.
All you would need to do is put something on the edges for the skis to slide on.

What about getting it off? I tugged and tugged and cursed until I finally gave up. Thing didn't budge. I could lift the rear end, but no way could I lift and pull. Maybe two guys could. I'm not in bad shape but no way was I getting that off alone.

Put some plastic ski guides on the trailer deck so the carbides slide instead of digging into the decking.

That is not true at all. Neither of my two triples have been anything but sluggish off the line. I will gladly put my stock with studs ZRT600 against any stock with studs ZR600. I assure you the triple will be ahead off the line all the way to to top speed.

Sluggish was a bad choice of wording. The triples I've had and ridden compared to twins, out of the hole response isn't as good with triples. I've only ridden older piston port engine triples, and now we do have a 96 ZRT which is case reed and triple piped, but I have yet to ride it. Dad's 440 kicked my ask every single time off the line, then kept in front of me for a little ways.

Carbides on the skis do not like to let go of the steel of you trailer bed.
Some plastic guides, a section of cut up bed liner, even a sheet of plywood will let the sled slide easier on the deck.

A 440 is a great sled to learn on. You ought to try to get a heavy sled off a trailer; that thing is not heavy. Next time park so that the front of the trailer is a lot higher than the back, and it will be easier to get off.

Thanks guys, yeah, I figured getting something a little smaller but still potent would make a good learning platform. Plus being recently overhauled was a huge positive selling feature. The guy selling it was really nice too and offered lots of advice and even followed up with me the next day. In a few years when my kids outgrow the mini sled I'm heading south to pick up this weekend (either an '03 arctic cat zr 120 or an '01 skidoo mini z that's barely used), they will also have something to transition into that's not ridiculously overpowered.
My trailer does have a plywood bottom but that thing was not sliding anywhere. I'll look into getting plastic slides for it, see what what princess auto has.

440's are real fun sleds. It's still fun to get on our 440 coming off the bigger sleds. It's a more nimble machine and with it's clutching setup, it gets up and moves pretty quick.

Go to somewhere that does Rhino Lining Or Line-X. They will have tons of take-off pickup bed liners. You should get 'em fairly cheap. Cut to width, viola! Plastic slides! I cut strips about 8" wide using a jigsaw. It was easy and works really well.
