I'm back! With a new sled!

Hey guys, I was on this site getting some very usefull info on my last sled. 98 ac zrt 600. This year I upgraded to an 05 rmk 900. I rode it for the first time yesterday and its a beast. Its a little heavy but the power more than makes up for it! However today when I backed it off the trailer I was shocked to see a puddle of antifreeze on the trailer and all the way down the ramp! Needless to say that ended my day pretty quick! I took it home and I can't find any visible wet spots anywhere. I poured some water in the reservoir and it came gushing out of the belly pan. I need some advice. The way I see it I only have two options, pull the motor or drill out all of the rivots and take the belly apart? Anybody heard of anything like this before? Any help is greatly appreciated!

If it's leaking that much, you should be able to better identify where it's coming from. If there's a skid plate on the sled, pulling that won't get you anywhere; the bulkhead that holds the engine is in the way.

The 900 has a front radiator and a bunch of hoses. Take a look at the cooling system diagram here: Browse

I would start by running a hose with water flowing into the system, then examining each hose. It's likely there's a bad hose or loose clamp. Antifreeze is toxic to animals (people, too) so you don't want it to puddle. If you run it on the ground, dilute with plenty of water!

Good luck! Not fun to start having problems with a new ride.

loss of antifreeze

Thanks for the prompt reply. The link you left was very helpfull in understanding the full scope of the cooling system. However I was able to identify everything except for a unit behind and beneath the motor. This is where I suspect the problem is. I had a friend run water through the system and it came pouring out the bottom of the motor, I think. There is no skid plate. Just sheet metal and rivots. Thereis a black plastic plug also. I pulled it out, inside looked like a spot where a drain plug should be. I bought one plugged it and its still pouring out. Could a guy drill out the rivots and remove the sheet metal to gain access tothe bottom of the motor?

The engine sits in the bulkhead, which is a structural part of the chassis. Look at the web page at the "chassis, front" diagrams to see. It's not removable for access to the engine. If you need to access the engine, you will have to pull it. You can remove rivets to all the plastic bellypan on each side to get a better look at where the water is coming from, if needed. Replacement rivets are stainless steel and are difficult to pull if you don't have an air tool.

There is a front heat exchanger between the engine and the tunnel that could be leaking.

There are a few places to get manuals on CD for your sled. If you have to pull the engine, I would invest in one of those to guide you. With all the electronics and the airhorns and fuel rails, it can be a bit intimidating.

Engine Dismount Update

Hey guys, first I would like to say thanks to BC Dan for that link to the parts website. Really helpfull in understandng the workings of the machine. Although it is not quite as thorough as I need it to be so I have ordered a service manual. I am in the midst of pulling the motor only now that the weather is reasonable enough to attempt it. No heat in the garage! I have got the motor most of the way out with a few snags like the wire going to the stator, fuel lines and a wire that goes to the top of the head? They are giving me problems! But I was able to finally get a good enough look underneath and the leak is coming from a small rectangular hole in the block just below the water pump. The dealer tells me the water pump is probably shot. I can probably fix it myself but what a pain. Not quite as bad as I thought it would be to pull the motor but all my buddies are going out this weekend and here I am. Any help with those stator wires untill I get my manual in six days?
