So I bought my new to me snowmobile. The guy bought it last year but never registered it. The previous owners signed the transferable registration, a bill of sale, and a transaction form but they're all dated January 2012. It's now December and I'm not buying it from them, I bought it from someone else whose name isn't on anything. I think he intended for me to register it as if I bought it directly from the previous owners, which is fine with me. I'm sure this happens all the time. Does anyone think I'll have a problem at the DMV with the dates? I hope this isn't going to turn into a nightmare. I don't want to have to contact the previous owners. I don't know if explaining to the ppl at the DMV the situation would be a good thing and they'd help me, or a bad thing and they'd tell me all sorts of hoops I have to jump thru.

Maybe I shouldn't have bought it when I saw it was complicated. It was a good deal and I drove 2 1/2 hours to get there, so maybe that's why I did it.

Planning on going to the DMV on Monday, and if there's a problem, fix it (if possible) and go to another one.

What you could do if need be, is I Registered all of my sleds in Wi on line! All they need is the serial #!

Just register it as if the guy you got it from never existed and you got it from the previous owner. So you didn't register last year, so what? There was no snow, so you didn't ride it.

It's not against the law to not register a snowmobile unless you are riding, or trailering it in transit

If his name isn't on any of the paper work can you fill out the spots where your name would go. like on the receipt it would say like i (your name ) agree to buy and so on and so on. Then you can sign at the bottom and fill out the tax forms with your name?

i've went through with 2 sleds. the first time i ended up going to the original owner. The second time i ended up filling out the Form MV-51b. I thinks that's the form you have to take a picture or pencil etching of the vin# to the dmv. they will give you a non transferable reg. so you can ride it that they can make sure its not stolen.

I have also realized i will probably never buy another one with out the proper paper work because for me personally it has caused huge headaches

That's what I'm afraid of, and I will be more careful next time to get decent paperwork. I guess all I can do is try, and see what they say, and see what happens. I hope I don't have to contact the previous owners, but I may, and oh well. Live and learn, right?

I have decided I am too much like my mother and need to not worry so much.

Registered the snowmobile with no problems, no questions asked.
