What do you use for a base layer??

My most wonderful wife and I will be making a trip out to West Yellowstone for a weeks riding the first week of february, we are planning a couple long adventures and I know that getting cold can make for a miserable trip.
I mainly use the heavy military polypro long johns but am wondering what others use or recomend for a base layer??
Are the expensive Under-Armour worth the money, I have been told that the Fleet Farm heavy thermals are just as good but have never used them.

i dont wear too much on the actual trip because i get hot. I wear flannel pajama pants under heavy duty snowpants. I wear a long sleeve with a sweatshirt and a fairly thick coat. One thing i make sure of is good gloves and warm boots. I use ice armor gloves. There water resistant, very thin and comfortable, and VERY warm. They are made for snowmobiling/skiing/snowblowing. They are about 50 dollars. My full face helmet keeps my head warm while riding but i suggest a ski mask incase you get cold.

Subbed for info . I'm new to all this and so I'm slowly aquiring gear. First season I figured it would be cold so I wore long johns , heavy pants carhart bibs ( its what I have ) a long sleeved shirt, hoodie , flannel shirt, and heavy carhart coat. I was so hot I couldn't keep my helmet from fogging up, partially because I was getting stuck every 10 min. This year I am going to wear slot less

Dressing properly is tuff with the possible changing conditions! Cloudy & windy turning to sunny/ no wind. Next thing you know it's a blizzard! Lol

I wear Under Armour Cold Gear Compression fit- seem warmer to me than the slightly loose fit Cold Gear. 1/4 zip fleece, MAYBE a sweatshirt under the fleece depending on temp??? Jacket is a HJC, Star model??? or whatever model had the star on it from about 10yrs ago!

Depending on temps maybe some C9 long johns from Target, jeans & my new last year Coldwave bibs (were about $120).

Boots & socks I am still working on! Currently have a set of Rocky pack boots, and try to NOT wear socks that have cotton!!!! Looking at some Baffins though, just can't decide which model.

I get cold easy. Like when stopping trailside for a snack, or to take in the view!

Good luck deciding!
Chris

To me boots/socks/gloves are most important. As long as your coat deflects wind and holds in some heat im all good. Of coarse we dont usually get below 0, but it sure gets windy! Our wind factor sometimes gets -20
