Question 1997 Summit 670 I think it's a carb problem?

Hi i bought a 97 Summit 670 and the guy said it had been running a bit rough lately and that just the carbs needed to be cleaned and that he thought it might have just had bad gas. But i siphoned out the gas and cleaned the carbs and it didn't seem to help. I can get it started but it won't rev up and if i try to rev it up it will bog down.

Check easy stuff like clogged inline fuel filter, take a good look at carbs too. Is it running correctly at low RPM's?

Not quite, after a lot of playing with the throttle i can get it to run for about 30 seconds just idling with a tinny tad of throttle every few seconds but then it will die. And in answer to Aduck yes the compression is good.

Try continually squirting fuel in with the primer. If it runs better that way then the carbs must be dirty/something's not right in the fuel system

Ok, so I cleaned the carbs and carb boots and it seemed to work. It was revving up and I had it going for a good minute and then it started to backfire some, and then slowly started to bog down and stopped responding to throttle, and so then... it died.

Sounds like you sucked up anything that was crappy in the tank. Was there water in the fuel? Drain the bowls and try again.

You can drain the carbs without removing them, theres a plug on the bottom of each carb, on the float bowl

Could be worth trying to drain old gas out of tank as SEG is referring to, if there is any junk in there it isn't helping. Can you tell if it's getting either too much or not enough fuel? After it dies do the plugs look wet?

I already drained 6 gallons out of the fuel tank, there was a little in the bottom though. And yes after it dies the plugs are wet.

Yeah probably not a bad idea, if the plugs are wet then double check to see that the floats aren't sticking or in upside down. Sounds like it's flooding out

Hi guys frist I won't to thank all of you for the help. I finally got the sled running and guess what it needed...1 new piston and rings, 1 new cylinder, and a new head, and 2 new exhaust valves. and all this because the last owner did't clean the exhaust valves each year. Wow.
