Trading sleds, need your opinion

Hi all, been a while since i posted here, dont think i recognize any of you.
Anyway, ive got an 03 classic touring 600 and a 99 indy sport 440. Both are in decent running order. The classic has about 2067 miles on it, and the sport has 4255 miles. Im looking at an 08 IQ 800. Its got aprox. 3800 miles with a new track with studs and a handlebar riser and an under-seat bag. He was initially asking 6800 for it but i know thats quite steep and i think he agreed, hes not really giving us a price right now, i think he want us to make the first move. I guess my question is, what do you think of the sled? I heard the iq's are nice. And also what do you think i should expect to get out of mine? Im hoping he still isnt thinking around 6800, just wanting some input, thanks in advance..

The 03 should be worth about $2800 the 99 about $1000-1200. The 08 might be worth $5000?

Thats about what we've seen with the 03 it does have the handwarmers in the back and a hitch, its got a brand new battery, new carbides and new crank seals. The 99 only brought like 650 from a dealer around here (kinda to be expected) but on KBB it only says its worth $660 and NADA says $875, both a little lower than i had hoped, its been a great sled the only thing wrong with it is a small tear in the seat.

I agree about finding a rush and I think I would stay away from the 800 motor

Look at the manufacture date on the tunnel. Sleds that were made after January 1 of the model year will sometimes have some updates in them that also make it into the following model year. No guarantees, though.

Maybe BC_Dan will pick up this thread and chime in on that motor / machine and whether or not there were late model year updates that were done (more importantly, did any make it into the following year).

Personally, I think the biggest 2-stroke motor I would ever consider would be the 700. There just seem to be too many people having more significant problems with the 800s, regardless of riding style, year, etc.

If you're used to a 440 fan, and still find yourself smiling when you ride it, that 800 is gonna be an awful lot more machine. If you don't have chances to get that motor up into the higher RPMs with some regularity, you're not getting the most out of it. So, why take the big hit on fuel economy if you're not pushing that motor?

Well to be honest i wasn't really smiling when i was on it. I was smiling at the end of the day knowing it was still in one piece and i could trust it would start again tomorrow but thats about it. I was always bringin up the rear when ever we were on a group ride and when the snow was wet at all it would build up in my tunnel and my top speed was probably 65 miles an hour, i made the mistake of riding my friends Pro-RMK 800 and holy wow that thing is nice. Made it really hard to go back to my 440. Our 600 was nice but still not quite what i was looking for. The thing was a tank though, it was a classic touring. It was kinda the f-250 of the snowmobile world, ya know the 3/4 ton pickup. Anyways maybe your right, i would probably be happy with a 700 its just that this deal was nice cause the guy was looking for two smaller sleds.

Let's back up one second... Are you sure it's an IQ 800? I can't find any reference to an 800 from Polaris for 08 outside of the Dragon.

2008 was the first year for the 800 small block engine from Polaris. The original design had a single ring piston. Every one of 'em were recalled. Each got a new head with new pistons and a reflash of the ECU. That was the first of MANY reflashes as Polaris tried to figure a way to keep that engine from burning up. Some also got new silencers. Sometimes it helped, lots of times there were still burndowns.

With that many miles on it, I would think that the sled is at least past that part. I would not pay a premium for an early 800, the past record is against it. Look at the NADA guide or Kelley Blue book. I would pay no more than the low value. JMHO

Keep the fuel filter changed, that has shown to contribute to low fuel delivery and has caused burndowns. Filters are spendy and are an automotive style and a PITA to get to, at least on my RMK's. I'm assuming yours is similar

If he's looking for a couple of smaller sleds, maybe he will entertain a partial swap? Your 440 is a great kids sled

Alright thanks for the info, he says he didn't buy it new but he thought that all the updates were done to it, he also gave me the VIN so i could check for myself, do i just take this to a dealer and they can tell me? Or can i just contact polaris over the internet? And also would you think they can be a nice reliable sled after all the updates? Im definatley looking forward to getting into that iq chassis, havn't rode anything but a Gen II my whole life. Thanks again!

The dealer can tell you by the VIN if the updates were done. Should be able to do that over the phone.

It's really hit and miss with the 800 engine. Some run awesome with zero issues, some burn down multiple times. Good luck with your decision, the IQ chassis is a nice upgrade.

$6800 is ridiculous for that! My brother almost bought a 10 Rush 600 for $5000!

Dan,

Neither of them lists an IQ 800 for 08 - that's what prompted me to ask in the first place.
