anyone ever tried to tig a cylinder

so I had to drill and retap the holes for the carb boots to mount to. I got 10 of the twelve done with no problem I started the 11 got the tap about halfway and all the sudden the ear the bolt goes though broke off. when I drilled it I made sire to center it just drilling out the old bolt. while tapping this hole there was no struggle I didnt have to force anything just all of the suddem it popped of. so my ? is has anyone ever tried to tig weld a cylinder. I was goint to try and tig the ear back on but just figured id ask if anyones ever tried to tig on a cylinder and what the outcome was

I would put all of the other bolts in and tighten them up. Drill out the hole, fill with JB Weld, shove bolt in, call it a day. It should be air tight is what you are after. Let's face it, it just holds the carbs on. It's not a motor mount bolt

it broke half the ear off so theres only half a hole thats why I was asking if I was to tig that piece back on if I would work, I have an 01 mxz 800 I just wanted to see if its been done to know if you could even tig on these cylinders

Bring it down I have a guy here that does it all the time! What were you thinking? drilling it out!

Ok if you break off a bolt, STOP, don't drill! Take a flat washer and just weld it to the broken bolt! The heat of the weld will go down threw the bolt and expand it! Let it cool awhile and then just spin the broke bolt right out with a pair of pliers! REALLY!

I believe if they did it would say Magn somewhere on it?
If the washer trick didn't work the weld didn't penetrate deep enough! And don't use a nut! for some reason it pulls the heat up instead of letting it go down the bolt?

weld a washer on first let it cool then weld a nut onto the washer, you get best of both worlds heat from washer and grip to take it out from bolt.

It can be welded with no problem. It can get a little tricky because cast aluminum has a lot of porosity. Should be fine though considering it doesn't have to be sealed. Clean it REAL GOOD. Oil and residue over the years seeps into the pores of the casting and can make welding it a pain. Should be fine though.

. Or those cylinders paint? If not you would be easily able to notices the oxidation on those cylinders. Magnesium oxides at a very fast rate. And ive never heard of magnesium cylinders before.
