There are several things that could be done. What sled?
Check that the track is only as tight as need be as not to ratchet.
The 8" idlers could help as well as extervert drivers.
Less friction with a taller carbide?
As lean as safe on the carbs.
Clean clutches that will shift out a bit quicker (may ecelerate slower)
I understand that the belt drive for the chain case has less friction?

How much are you getting out of it.
I suspect that you probably won't get much more out of it. Main things are to loosen the track, and keep your thumb out of it's throat.

Well, the SS is pretty tapped out for fuel economy. You will find that is in fact quite acceptable in comparison to other sleds in the market. I believe people usually get around 15 mpg. Only way to do much better is to just buy the SDI or the newer ETEC engines.

Actually, even the 500SS will get up to 18mpg.

Well, it depends on how you look at it. Seeing as the SS is 3 CC's bigger than skidoo's 600 block... It's hard to call it top of the small bores.

Well the 600's are creeping closer and closer to the last 700's that were made.
I personally consider small bores the 440-550 class. But then again I own a 600, so that might be part of it.

Well a 600 hasn't had that status since 95-6-7-8? Speaking of the past what was the largest displacement in 98? Cat didn't even make a 700 that year!
