Chaincase oil substitutes
Hi! It is time to change the oil in my xlt chaincase. Are there any automotive oils that could substitute? Like 80-90 gear oil or something? Just curious as it is much cheaper and easier for me to get some sort of gear oil. Thanks!

umm to be honest with u i only run pure from polaris or spectra chain case oil full synthetic oils the pure was recommended to me by the dealership and they said the spectra was a good substitute for the pure even tho u get more oil and the oil is cheaper with the pure polaris i like both the oil is very low viscosity so that u get good lubrication in the cold weather if u use 80-90 its ganna be thick in the cold weather i use a 75-90 in the rear end of my 6.0 gmc dif so
use the good stuff dont cheap out sleds are expensive to own and operate like the older ones

If you're not going to use chaincase fluid, ATF is a close substitute. A lot of guys use it, I have in the past when I had a chaincase problem and the dealer wasn't open. It worked fine. Like dhridenh said, 80-90 gear fluid is really thick and more appropriate for gears. Your chaincase doesn't have gears, it has sprockets and a chain and needs a thinner oil that can penetrate into the chain links.

In a chain case you should use a non-detergent single viscosity oil.
Multi-vis and detergents do not stick to the chain as well, it slings off too easily.
As single weight {SAE 30 max} is OK, but a 5 weight is sufficient.
