Secondary sheave removal

Is it possible to remove the secondary sheave on a 88 phazer without the special tools. I don't have the special tool but I need to get the jack shaft out. Any suggestions or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

short of the proper sized wrench or socket to fit the bolt(21mm or 22mmoff the top of my head), that clutch simply slides on and off the splined shaft. standard thread, righty tighty-lefty loosey.

depending on prior maintenance history, sometimes heating the bolt can help if its stubborn. clutch itself may even require some persuasion and penetrating oil.

track on the ground and brake on for best leverage if your not using air tools.

Thank you. The service manual was telling me I need some special tool. I haven't tried yet but that makes since. I'll try it. Thanks again

the only special tool and its not really needed once you do it a few times is the one for installing the helix(also referred to as the tork cam). unless snap ring pliers would be a special tool?

I already have the rear skid removed. The handlebars and all are removed. Any other way to lock the brake. I'm stripping it to a bare chassis and the rebuilding it from the ground up.

The only thing left is the chaincase and track. Motor and everything is stripped off. Steering shaft and steering components are also gone. I'll be having some more questions for you soon I'm sure. I appreciate your help.

you are gaining valuable experience on sequence. if your fighting the bolt on the secondary, wait until you open the chaincase up. your going to miss that brake alot. comes in handy for the nut on the upper gear and the bolt on the lower gear. remember that brake on reassembly. also, be sure and not pull that brake lever while its not attached to the case and disc. you will open up another can of worms.

if you have a strap wrench, wrap it around the jackshaft. if your not worried about marring the shaft, pipe wrench or channel locks may help you if your lacking air tools or an electric impact. you can always use a 1" wrench or large crescent on the driveshaft to inhibit movement if you have extra hands available.

worst case since your stripped that far down, if you can get the bolt off the lower gear and the driveshaft removed, you can unbolt the 4 bolts on the carrier bearing for the jackshaft leaving the brake disc and clutch attached. then you would have some room to work on it.

I got it but your right that bolt in the chaincase was a bear. Vice grips were my friend. I got it stripped down bare now so I'm going to start pulling the skis apart and replacing all those bushings next. You don't happen to have any skis for those 84-89 phazers do ya?

I do a lot of ditch banging. I live in southwest Ohio and we don't get a lot of snow. I'm afraid the plastic skis won't take the abuse. I do a lot of road crossing and the county an state get out roads cleared pretty quick.
